Once again another coil question

Hi everyone! new to this site... ok so I am getting ready to do the plugs and ignition coils on my truck. when I was looking for some coils I came across these- http://www.summitracing.com/parts/gr...view/make/ford - has anyone tried or heard anything about these? I like the fact that they have more volts than stock. just want to see what people think abut them. thanks!

No better than stock and less reliable. Change the plugs, but don't replace the coils, just change the boots.

If you insist on changing the coils, get only Motorcraft or Visteon.

Why do you think you NEED coils? The OEM coils usually go 200k.

One mod that a few of us are making is using the stock coils but changing the spark plug wires along with the boots. The stock wires are just coiled springs, the ones in this link are much better and offer lower resistance. You may be able to find a better price, link is for info. I replaced mine, but was not having any problems. Getting slightly better MPG.

well I have 155,000 on my 05 and we travel for motocross. need the truck to be ready to pull the trailer. I do have a miss when in OD and we are going up a hill, right before it shifts down. it does run smooth except that. I just figured it will need both since it is time for a tune up. I also plan on doing the Cam Phaser delete from Livernois Lockout kit with a SCT tuner. Just wondering MeanGene why if that kit is 130.00, and a set of Accel coils with springs and boots for 209.00.

Accel coils are junk too. You might as well buy generic Chinese coils at 80 bucks a set if you aren't going to use OEM.

Yeah, they are a little up there and I didn't feel much of a difference in the seat. But when you install the new springs they go on with a click and you know they are on. Check out this link, there are some pictures that provide more information.

Also, when removing the stock springs from the coil, do not pull straight on them. Twist or turn the springs gently right or left (depending on the winding) and they will come off without damage. That's only if you want to reuse them.

ok, so how do I know if a coil is going bad and causing the miss, and how do I know when the coil wire is bad and the coil is not to blame?

my other question is, if accel and msd has been in business so long why are they junk? when I built my mustang I had a full MSD system and never had a problem. so I guess I am just wondering why they are so bad.

Did your Mustang have COP or separate coil packs/distributor and wires? BIG difference.

Are you presently HAVING a miss? If so, how many miles on the plugs and what brand are they?

there is about 40000 on the motorcraft plugs, and new cats. I am having a miss in cylinder 1 right now. but it is only under a load and at wot. Yeah my mustang had the brain box, MSD6al, MSD hot coil, MSD distributer, and MSD wires. I just thought that they would make a better coil pack than OEM. I did have a guy message me this weekend that has a set of Granatelli Motor Sports Hot Street Coil Packs with about 10000 and he said no problems yet. But that is why I am asking about them because I am just not sure what to do yet.

To see if it's the coil, swap coil #1 with one of the others. If the miss doesn't go away or switch cylinders, then you look at the plug, injector, or even compression.

ok thanks for all the help everyone. just for giggles I thought I would run to the "zone" and get a set of boots and springs to try. they were cheap and figured if it was just the boots that I would see if it fixed the problem.... well it did, anyone that is not sure just get some boots and springs and see if that will fix the problem. it took about 20 min and boom it was done. took for a test drive and wow.. it made all the difference. so now I ordered the Granatelli Motor Sports spring to wire upgrade and will be swapping out the ones from the zone..

so thanks everyone for your help!!
