"CHECK GAUGES" and no acceleration

Hey guys, just made an account here. Here's a problem I'm hoping y'all can help me solve.
My truck ('04 5.4 SuperCab XLT) and I worked hard yesterday hauling 36 bales of hay (8 in the bed, 28 on a 4x8" trailer) 100 miles loaded and 100 empty, averaging 60-65mph. On the return trip when I was loaded, I kept my overdrive off to save rough shifts when going up hills. Throughout the trip my engine temp was good, (only 5deg elevation with that load,) gauges were in the white.

After I was unloaded and dropped the trailer, I was stopped waiting to make a left at a red light. My CEL came on and the information center read "Check Gauges"... nothing was remarkable. I run an ultragauge ODBII reader and it indicated the truck hadn't thrown any trouble codes. Alright, I thought, my mechanic's down the street. When the light turned I put my foot on the gas to make the turn and... nothing. The truck rolled backwards. Fortunately there was no one behind me, so I threw on my flashers, put it in park, shut the truck off. It turned over just fine, which cleared the CEL and Check Gauges, I threw it back in drive and it accelerated fine.

Anybody ever seen this before? Sign of impending multiple-system failure?

Thanks,
Coolbreeze

Dumb question, but did the engine stall on you? How well does the truck run otherwise?

Your hay load is really not that big of an issue, pretty small trailer actually.

Mine did the exact same thing, twice, back in 2010. Both times in cold weather. Running 55 mph and all of a sudden no throttle. Check Engine light came on and the engine just idled at normal RPM. The throttle pedal was basically dead. I coasted to the side of the road and turned the key off. The truck started right back up, CEL went away, and I drove it like it never happened. I always said if it happened a third time I would replace something, but it hasn't happened again, 3 years later...

Sounds like an issue with either the throttle body or pedal sensor, being drive by wire if there's an issue with either one it could exhibit symptoms like that.

Does seem odd that it wouldn't throw a code though.

Thanks all for the replies. It did not stall, just idled like Jaws said. It normally runs fine, has a good smooth idle, accelerates well, all around in great shape (minus a slight case of cam phaser tick.) I redid the plugs and fluids about 5k miles ago but I have been meaning to clean the TB... I will give that a look.
