How to remove head restraints - XL?
2008 XL with only two front seats..
I bought seat covers and they look like they are correct. There are two holes for the head restraints but I can't figure out how to remove the head restraints. I looked in my owners manual -- no help. I can move the head restraints up and down a couple of inches but can't remove them. I tried both sides and used a lot of force (was afraid to use more). What am I missing?
(BTW, I tried searching and came close but no cigar.)

Thanks! I tried that on both sides and failed. I had to press that clip to get them to adjust. Let me go try it again.
I still cannot remove them. I tried using a 2x2 (with towels for protection) to pry it off while holding in the clip -- no go. Nowhere in the owners manual does it state how to remove them. It feels like some sort of block on the other stem -- the one without the release clip. WTF?
Never mind! I didn't search good enough. I found this thread and sure enough, off they came:

The manual says...
1. Pull the head restraint out to end of travel. Press release button, pull head restraint past its stop position.
2. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, press the release tab on the second head restraint rod guide and pull head restraint free of seatback.
What I see ...
For #1, the release button is easily visible. It's the on the outboard rod guide and is the one used to adjust the headrest height.
For #2, You have to look close to see the release tab. It's on the inboard side rod guide and is flush at the base.

Okay so I just went out and did mine
Turns out there is two things to push ... the obvious one and then a hidden flush mounted on on the other post
Here is a picture of what I'm talking about ... if you look at the one on the left there is a flush mounted tab that needs to be pushed in as well as the obvious one to push in on the right

I actually did the flush mount one first and pulled it up enough to hold it open then did the easy one on the other side

Thanks. You were right -- there are two releases, one on each stem. The "inboard" one is hard to see. Thanks again!!!

Haha I was puzzled at first two like what the heck
Then I saw that flush mount part moving and said well that's odd so I pushed it in haha
Glad you found it ... seems they have not changed it in quit a while

Funny thing is that I felt all around the other stem and didn't feel a release clip. If I had only looked at it closely I would have seen it. Oh well.
Just installed the seat covers. All's well that ends well. Thanks again for the pics and help! I appreciate it. Have a good day!

I tried removing mine once for some unimportant reason a while back, couldn't get it out. Glad I know how to do it now, will probably save some future frustration! Now there's another helpful thread out there for others to find. So good job guys!
What the heck is that picture of, papa?

I thought about it . . . but the seat covers are very boring gray covers for my very boring silver/gray XL. They do fit nice though but I won't bore you with pics. They are Covercraft, purchased thru this website:

I've bought seat covers, floor mats, and dash mats from them for my last four trucks, three F150s and a Silverado.

Ya didn't want want to shake things up with a bit of camo? Lol
I bought this 2008 XL (used) just a few months ago. When I saw it I knew it was for me: completely stock, down to the tires. Boring. Boring. Boring.
