my tailgate keeps making this banging noise when I close it. it is coming from the left side hinge. its not all the time jut often, and sometimes is pretty loud. I have taken it off, cleaned and lubed it and don't see anything broke.

Mine does the same thing, I think it is the tailgate lift assist bar that needs to be replaced.

 

I have the same issue. For what its worth, I didn't have this problem on my 06 until the past few months (9 years old). I coated the inside with old motor oil and it minimized the knocking sound, but only for a couple days.

Anyone just let it go and deal with the noise? Does this damage anything if you let it be?

I have yet to fix mine with no other issues.

 

Mine has been doing it for over 2 years and has not gotten any worse.

 

It's the torsion rod in the tailgate. It's been discussed at length in some past threads and they contain instructions for the repair and part number.
