Tiregate VT

My last truck before this one was a full size Bronco. The two things I missed most from that truck are the removable top and having the spare hanging on the back. Don't ask why, I just liked it. Obviously, I'm not about to bust out the Sawzall and make a removable top. But I have always wanted this one thing to mount my spare on the back...

I saved up the cash to get a vertical Tiregate (FD 80002-VT). Ordered on 5/29, it finally arrived on 6/27. Now, I've had a 35x12.5x18 mounted on the factory spare rim sitting in the bed of my truck for quite a while. Unfortunately, the folks at Tiregate don't tell you how far the flange on their products sticks out. The flange on the Tiregate fell about an inch short of making contact with the flange on the back of my spare. Of course they said they'd never heard of this problem before and they were going to make me a spacer. I sent them measurements and pictures but got little feedback from them for almost another month. Fortunately, I ordered the gate from Jeg's and they made me a deal on an 18" wheel that was the same style as my other four, had shallow enough backspacing that it'd work with the Tiregate, and only 18" so I could use it with the full size spare I already had. This is the part where I can't stop smiling. That wheel delivered yesterday, I took the afternoon off to get the tire mounted, and took the truck wheeling this morning. "Pics or it didn't happen", right?

Oh yeah, on the flatter spots, I let my little girl ride on my lap. Hopefully, this'll be "one of those memories" for her...

That's looks great! It also looks like a lot of fun. I lived in Longmont a long time ago, hard to believe but I left there more than twenty five years ago.

Back then there were several companies that could have made you a carrier locally. I miss that areas and being to run up to the mountains on weekends.

That looks awesome. And I love the idea of having the spare out from under the vehicle. (For several dozen practicality reasons)...

I really like the fabric topper too. Looks like a great way to have the best of both worlds as it were...
