Check engine light came on shortly after an oil change

Angry Check engine light came on shortly after an oil change

Wel to make a long story short I made the mistake taking the truck to one of them Valveoline oil cahnge places on Thursday morning. I just been to busy to get it dome my self figured I'd give it a try. well on my way to work that afternoon as i have a 50 mile one way into work drive about halfway there the check engine light was on. Truck was runing fine except for its normal misfires going up hills. As it stil has the original plug in it now at 130k+ mile on it. Is it just a coincidence that the light came on right after a oil change or should I go chew the manger an new one and try ad get them to cover the cost of what ever sensor they broke when I get the codes read latter on today. Since the truck was fine until les than 30 miles from when the oil was changed and the light came on.

I think it's coincidence. If you have 130k on the original plugs and it's been misfiring I'm betting the misfire monitor finally kicked in. I highly doubt that an oil change place would have broken a sensor, most of them aren't that incompetent.

Funny thing, the same sort of thing happened to me after an oil change a couple years ago - the CEL popped on as I was pulling out of the place. The code was legitimate, I needed new plenum gaskets and isolator bolts. Absolutely nothing to do with the oil change process.

I agree with glc. If you already had a misfire I bet the cel came on due to that. Get the codes read and you'll know for sure.

Get those plugs changed, regardless. They have to be stressing the COPs

Got the code read at AdvanceAuto this morning. Its a PO171 bank 1 system too lean. So do you think plugs threw that code or the PCV valve or a loose vacum line.

The only thing that I would think may have happened at the oil change that would cause this is the airbox is not on right. They usually check the air filter when you get an oil change.

When I was but a lad I changed the oil on my Mother's car. My Mother called me from work screaming that she had run out of oil. Lesson learned: bad crap happens when you use the wrong oil filter; and women never let you forget mistakes...35 years and counting.

Also reset the codes and see if it comes back.

See if you still have the oil filler cap and the dipstick is seated properly.

If you have time to post on here, you have time to change your own oil. Those places are horrible. I'd go to a dealer you can trust before a Quicky Lube place. At least you will get a Motorcraft Filter and the right oil. They probably hit a wire when removing the oil cap. Everything is fast fast fast in those places.

"Hitting a wire" should not cause a lean code.

Took it into the dealership yesterday for the plug change and to have them resolve the check engine light. The coil pack on the #2 cylender is what caused the lean code. Only 2 plugs broke had them put new boots on the other 7 coil packs. Picked truck up this morning had alot more power and runs much beter I can WOT now. Before the plug change truck would damn near stall out if I tried a WOT.

Like I said - the oil change place didn't cause it - YOU caused it by deferring required maintenance.
