Method of getting the surround off the grille
This seems to work for me. Makes it a little easier if you have some feeler gauges laying around. I found that .007 - .009 inch works the best.

I used five flat screwdrivers when I changed mine out, same concept as yours pretty much, and not one broken tab.

break all of the tabs right off and boom, got your surround in one piece
