Recently my truck is making that noise when you turn the key while the vehicle is already running on startup. I'm thinking it needs a new starter. Truck is a 2006 5.4 85k on it. I haven't seen a lot of issues with the starters so I thought I mention it see any other opinions. Also any recommendations on aftermarket starters.

 

Wow this JUST happened to me the other day, after 7+ years. First crank and then that horrible grinding noise. It hasn't happened since but I too am now prepping for a starter replacement.

 

Just replaced the starter this afternoon. No problems with the new one. The OEM one had a couple teeth almost missing. Wont let me upload a pic.
