Truck missing after replacing everything

I need help and guidance with a problem with my F150 and I hope I can get some here. My truck is a 2004 F150 4x4. The original engine recently died because of some oiling issues, but it had the same problems as the replaced engine is now having.

The engine is reading a misfire in the #1, 5, and 6 cylinder. It was doing this in the original engine, but after the engine was replaced, it ran great for a week. but now the same misfire is back. I replaced the COPS on those and there was no change. Its driveable, but I dont want to drive it like this.

The weird thing, I had the engine running and pulled both of the terminals to see off the battery and the truck kept running.

I know that the smartest thing is to just take it to ford for a diagnostic, but I am flat broke because of a divorce and I don't have that kind of money just laying around. I would suspect the PCM, and I know that is going to cost something that I dont have, but does anyone have any other ideas what this problem could possibly be.

This is draining me and I cant even afford to get another vehicle.

Any advice or options would be appreciated.

Is it a 5.4? What codes are you getting? If the alternator is charging, it will continue to run without a battery.

There is a list of codes in the Articles and How To section. Those codes indicate bad coils. How many miles on the plugs, coils and boots? You could have bad coils are it could be that the boots are cracked if they have been off and on. Also, you dn't have Champion plugs to you, they are smaller and require new boots. Did you use dielctic grease on the boot?

Check the connectors for the cops, the sockets that the pins go into could be pushed back just a tad. This will cause a bad connection even if the cop is plugged in all the way.

This is only a guess, but you said the new motor has the same problem as the old one. If you didn't put in a new harness that may be where the problem is comming from.

Also check your harness where it passes by the A/C dryer for chaffed wires, heard that can cause a simular problem.

Thanks for the help guys.

The cops are brand new. I literally just got them a few hours ago. I used the motorcraft plugs. I will check the socket. Are you refering to the female part, or the pins on the cops?

Did they reuse your old injectors when they replaced the engine? If so, they may just be nasty dirty, try throwing some Techron in the gas. O'Reilly's has a 2 for 1 sale on it right now.

Here's an update. Truck still running like crap. I pulled the injectors and they are pulsing what seems normal. I pulled each cop and checked on another spark plug and there is spark. I took it into ford and they didnt even charge me because they told me what i already knew. They said it a technicians nightmare, but looking at the power balance printout, the truck is misfiring on all cylinders at different times.

I also checked for vacuum leaks but found everything fine.

I'm really leaning towards pcm. Did i mention i had an edge evolution on the truck. I seem to recall reading some stories of the Edge glitching the pcm's. Is that something that can simply be reprogrammed or will i have to get another pcm? Ford said they can't test the pcm...that they would have to eliminate everything else before they can say its pcm. Thats a lot of parts and labor.

The Edge can not mess up a PCM. It can have bad tune that causes a problem but if you return the truck to the stock tune and it still does it then it is not the Edge.

Thanks Bluejay. I thought about that and I returned truck to stock a month ago but still runs like crap. I wonder if the pcm simply wont accept the stock tune back. After over a month, it will still not get out of the p1000 code.

I noticed that a few times, the edge would boot up with the hex file not found.
