The only thing you gain is a permanent filter that you clean periodically rather than replacing. You gain no power or mpg. I ran one on my 2005 for 135,000 miles.

I've always been a big K&N user so when I got my 05 that was the first thing I put in. Then went the CAI route and after fried plugs went back to just the drop in filter. Last summer the Ford Tech showed where dust was getting past it to the intake, almost like it wasn't thick enough to seal off dust from getting around it. Even though I took the CAI off I was still getting some sort of lean code and with the dust getting past the filter I just got rid of it and went with a long life Amsoil filter, haven't had any problems since.

Stick with the regular paper drop in. They are a lot cheaper and don't let as much crap into the intake.

I saw the results of a test once where the put a very fine filter behind the paper of K&N drop in. ***** were brand new. The K&N looked like it let in at least 3 times the dirt that the paper filter did. That and over oiling when cleaning it will cause all kinds of problems.

just run oem. cant get much better in that case. with the k and n you are never going to notice any power or mpg gains, thats just silly. all that you will get is a longer lasting filter and possibly run lean or fry some plugs.

Wix has OE style paper filters and are good. No reason not to use them. Same with Purolater.

Definitely look at the Bobs the oil guy test. In particular the filtration test.

That has to be an OLD article at BITOG - Amsoil hasn't had a foam air filter in MANY years - they are all paper-like cleanable dry nanofilters now. I use the Amsoil and am very pleased with it.

For OEM-style paper filters, the Motorcraft is as good as any, Wix is good, and the Napa Gold is a Wix.

I've been running K&N drop ins in all my daily drivers for more than 30 years. Have had no problems whatsoever.

Not really any performance gains to speak of. I just like to clean them and keep going.

I cleaned my MAF everytime I cleaned my filter, which was about 30,000 miles. It was just part of maintenance. Never had a problem. From it's first miles to 135,000, truck always used about a half quart of oil in 3500 miles. Whatever dust was allowed through the K&N never seemed to affect anything. I never over oiled, so that was not a factor. I don't think you get any measuarable gains from the dropin other than if you run it long enough, you save on filters. As someone else stated, I enjoyed messing with the engine and cleaning the filter every 30,000 was not a problem.

Also, my plugs came out without breaking at 66,000 miles and still looked new. I did have to have the throttle body cleaned at 100,000 but I think that is normal regardless of which airfilter you use.

I clean it along with the filter about once a Year. The sensor never looks dirty and the truck is running fine so I clean it (just because).
