well i hate thiss guys but
You are right about the gauge cluster but that is it. One thing out of 100 isn't bad considering all I have done to the ford... And I would possibly own a 4.6 or even a 6.2 but the 6.2 haven't been around long enough to show any bugs yet...
I love my Ford's, but I'll be the first to admit the 5.4 3V wasn't the pinnacle of Ford's engineering excellence. Horsepower and torque ratings are adequate at best, the spark plug issue is a black eye that could have been handled better by Ford, and there is no question this engine will never be referred to as being "bullet proof".....
im on my last ford vehicle. i have a 06 lariat with the 5.4. i have done all the recomended maintainence using the recommended fluids/parts. I have had to replace the cam phasers and lash adjusters twice. $1200 job each time. im constantly getting water in between my coil packs and spark plugs, and im on my second rear end and its going out. i have replaced all the bearings and its still whineing. with all the issues my ford has had, between the phasers, rear end, spark plugs, ect. its not worth, in my opinion, dealing with. i have had over $4000 in repairs done to it and it only has 150,000 miles. my wifes 2001 chevrolet silverado we have had since it was new, has 267,000 miles on it and has original everything. all i have done is oil changes and one tune up. i also had a 91 k1500 with 325,000 with original everything once again all i did was two tune ups and oil changes. my father in law has an 08 silverado and has already reached 250,000 miles and his still has original everything... ford needs to fix the problems with there trucks or they are going to lose me as a customer. there is no reason to have to have all that work done when i can buy a silverado, same price, and never have to worry about all that work.. dont get me wrong, my ford rides good and drives good and it has plenty of power.. when its working...if anyone knows any permanent fix for my problems, please, let me know.
The three items I named for the GM trucks you can find at least one on every 99-06 GM truck. Delphi is an awful electronics company and the window motors/gauges show it. The plastic handle bezels and actuator clips are usually broken on a door or tailgate. Those were terrible vehicles in terms of quality. I don't think they even attempted to fix it until the 07+ body style came out. It wasn't limited to their trucks, pretty much everything GM made was riddled with similar problems.

Once I realized my errors the truck already had 5 years, 100K miles, and badly clattering camphasers.
Nothing but MC FL820S and MC synthetic blend 5w20 in the '05. 110K and no clattering so far.
