Crank but won't start

Yesterday, my truck died in the middle of an intersection. Right before hand, it was idling rough. Now when I try to start it, it cranks for five seconds (without me doing it). Getting good pressure from the pump, all the fuses are good. Air intake is clear. Some one suggested that it might be the starter or the solenoid. Suggestions? 4.6l v8

Rough idling would make me think something with the ignition system. Coil packs, spark plugs maybe? Did you get a check engine light? You should be able to get a code and figure out what it is. Bigger issues could be low compression, head gasket, or fuel injectors.

No check engine light has popped up. It would make things a lot easier if it did. Found out the continuing cranking is something Ford did to all models after 07 due to engine flooding and wear. Going to replace the coils and plugs today. Did the fuel filter Saturday and it took me three hours to do just because I'm not as handy as my mind thinks I am.
