Help me please! ASAP

Hey guys, My truck recently started making this horrid noise. Keep in mind I did just have the starter and the fly wheel replaced.. It made the noise once and after 5-10 seconds it sounded like something turned off and quit making the noise.. Now it makes the noise constantly and doesn't turn off, afraid to drive it but taking it to the shop Monday morning! thanks!

I'll be willing to bet that the starter bendix is staying in the ring gear. Instead of popping in the ring gear when starting and immediately popping back out when the key in NOT in the start mode the bendix is staying in the ring gear. Take it back to whoever repaired it!.

Would you say it has to do with installation, or the starter unit itself?

Hard to say, could be either. Starter has to be aligned correctly, if its at any kind of angle to the flywheel/ring gear it could hang up. There is also a spring on the starter bendix that could be broken or weak.
I would say its definately related to the install as it didn't happen before that.

Will probably ruin the starter, not sure. Try to start the truck then climb underneath and tap the end of the starter (closest to the flywheel) with a hammer. Sometimes that will disengage the bendix.

Tried to get under there and hit it with a hammer and it didnt disengage. Going to drop it off shortly. What a PITA

I would stronly encourage you to call the shop that did the work. If you drive it much at all it will likely ruin the starter and PROBABLY the new ring gear as well! This IS NOT good.

I drove it home, and then to the shop it's now in their hands

I'd say the previous suggestions are correct since it didn't do it before.. Most likely the starter sticking. Had an old 84 that had the same problem a couple weeks ago pop up on the original starter. Replaced it and now it's back to normal.

Yes was the starter. They told me to expect it to happen over and over. Does someone make a good one that won't break. Thought dura last gold was good but that ford saying 1,000 sounds like it would of been better.

Why on earth would they say to expect it to happen over and over again? The chances of that happening are next to nothing and the fact that it happened to you (and them) is a one in a million deal. Are they trying to cover their butts in case they don't fix it correctly?

I don't know but I'm not about to go back and forth with this once a month. No way they would make a product so horrible? I'm hoping I just got a dud. Well see
