27 to 36 gallon swap

Anyone here actually swap there 27 gallon tank for the 36 gallon fuel tank. I have Extended cab 6.5' I know the 36 was option, found used tanks from 150 from various junk yards, but what all do I need, it longer but is it deeper??? do I need the straps?? Also the pumps have different part#s but what is different, cause if they are same height the fuel level should be the same right?? thanks

Will be watching this thread as this mod would come in handy for some of the hauls I do.

My '05 came with the 36 gallon tank. I'm here to tell Ya, it takes some extra cash at the pump to fill that tank. LOL

But, it's nice not to refill as often. I can go around 525-575 miles between fill ups depending where I'm driving.

I have the 36 gallon tank on my 2005 ext. cab 6.5 ft. bed, I'm not sure about the height of the tank being different, but the length is really long, it goes from about the front of the rear door to about 6 inches infront of the rear axle.

If I could go 600 miles on a tank I would be in heaven.

While I cannot help you with your questions, I can verify it is possible. I bought my 2004 exteded cab 6.5 ft new. It came with the 26 gallon tank and I had the dealer swap out a 36 gallon tank from another new truck. That was one of my few options that I had to have or i wasnt going to buy the truck. I love the range. Normal driving I can go ~ 550 miles per tank. Winter driving...not so much.

I am interested in this upgrade also. My local dealership gave me a parts list of what would need to be changed out : fuel pump, 2 fuel lines, 2 heat shields, and of course the tank. Total cost was justover $1500.

Nope, parts only. They refused the job claiming liability concerns.

Someone needs to figure this out! I can't stand having to stop before 300 miles. I stopped at a JY and looked at a tank that they thought was 36 gallons, but it looked just like my 26. Looking at the Ford parts website, it shows the same part number for the tank. I've found another JY that says they have 36 gallons tanks. maybe I'll go look tomorrow.

I bought a tank today for $100. It came complete, but it had water in it. The pump module is junk, but the dealer said it's the same module as my 26 gallon tank. Same length and width as my tank, but the profile is taller in places. I'll post pictures when I change the tank. It might take a little while, since I work a lot, and it's teens outside right now.

Looks like the existing straps and skid-plates will work. On the right side of the heat shield (near the driveshaft) are 3 horizontal strengthing ribs. On the big tank, they are all the same length. On my 26 gallon '04 the top one is shorter. Maybe one of you guys with the big tank can confirm this?

My truck has the smaller tank but we have an 09 that has the big tank and it sure is nice. My truck never seems to hold quite enough that you usually have stop twice a day if you are going anywhere at all.

I wouldn't give 1500 to swap in the bigger tank but I know it is something I would pay attention to when buying another truck. In fact I doubt I ever buy another truck that doesn't have the big tank or tailgate step.

I have the 36 gallon tank on my FX-4. Let me know if you want measurements or junky cell phone pics. I'm not pulling the fuel pump out though ;-)
