Do I really need a new engine???? I'm screwed!
Do I really need a new engine???? I'm screwed!
I sent a buddy of mine who use to work as a Ford dealer in the parts department and was friends with a few mechanics. I told him the 7 errors codes and that i replaced the cam sensors on it.
Here’s the codes.
1. P0011 Cam Position Time Over Bank 1
2. P0021 Cam Position Retard Bank 1
3. P0022 Cam Position Retard Bank 2
4. P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detect
5. P0316 Engine Misfire on Start Up 1st 1000RPM
6. P0340 Cam Position Sensor @ Bank 1
Here was his response.
"As you probably already know this engine is a VCT engine “variable cam timing”. When you said you replaced the cam sensors are you referring to the ones under the valve cover? If so did they have new screens(filters)? If we are talking apples to apples and you did replace the ones under the valve cover that the camshaft is probably toast. If you pull the valve cover off and pull the caps you will see. This was the worst year for this engine. I have a buddy that still works up at Krieger he used to do all of these. when it comes to this engine he is the best. One more thing. Depending on how bad the cams are my buddy told me 6 times out of 10 you end up replacing the engine. Don’t quote me on all of this it is just my best guess from seeing all of those codes and I also talked to one of my buddies here at work that also works on these from time to time and he is thinking the same thing at this time. Could be the cams...I wouldn't call it done yet until the wiring harnesses are checked along with the altenator charging diodes....

What have you replaced on this engine? What year? The cam chain tensioners have a tendency to fail, leaking oil pressure under the front timing cover, which results in loose chains, improper valve timing, and eventual damage to the cam phasers. In order to correct the problem, you need a timing kit that includes the chains, guides, updated tensioners. In addition, get a valve cover gasket kit and a front timing cover gasket kit. Altogether, if you are mechanically inclined and have the tools (basic hand tools, the rest you can rent cheap), this is not a difficult job. I'm doing mine this summer.
