Lost overdrive on 2004 F150 Lariat

1st-3rd all work fine but, OD just started slipping today(all of a sudden) No problems before today.
I have 116k on the truck.
Could this problem be something simple?
Is there anything that I can look for before I take it to the shop?
Thanks
Kurt

Try undoing the wiring harness, the one all the way to the left looking from the front of the truck. I had something similar happen, unhooked it, pulled the slack out and plugged it back in. If this is the case you may also have lost 4L as well. Worst case this doesn't work and you still have to take it in.

I lost OD in my 04' last year. It ended up being that the OD band was toast. It ended up costing my about $800 at my local transmission shop.

Probably from you not changing the transmission fluid like you're suppose to.

Hey all, been a while since I've been on the forum. I have just discovered this ugly little problem myself this past friday. I have a 2004 FX4 with ~155K miles. I went to pass someone, tranny downshifted. Once I passed the person OD would not engage. Like everyone else, seemed as if the tranny went into nuetral. No code was thrown. Only way I got home was with O/D manually disengaged. Took it to the Ford dealer and even told them I had been doing research on this and other forums to kind of direct them to a possible problem (NOT tell them how to do their jobs). They hooked up a "ISD" which I assume is some sort of Ford diagnostic system. They basically told me their diagnostics said my 4th and OD gears were shot (teeth worn)due to the trunnion bearing. Eventually, driving the truck with OD off will tear up the lower gears as well.

Now my question is if no code was thrown and they did not even drop the pan or valve body how do they know condition of my gears? The ISD tells them that? I would have thought they would have investigated this servo clip. Do I REALLY need to force them to check that? They are trying to sell me a new (refurbished) tranny @ ~$3000 out the door.

There doesnt seem to be as many transmission specialists as there used to be but I am getting a second opinion tomorrow. I will tell them too about this "clip", but I cant keep driving this truck around to get estimates.

Please advise. Thanks!

The Ford dealership tried to sell me the same thing. I didn't believe them so I found an experienced transmission shop and he had fixed this problem a few times over the years. Since I only had 55k he fixed it and hasn't skipped a beat since. He did tell say if I had high mileage he would recommend a rebuild which was still much cheaper than a Reman.

I wouldn't make any decision until you talk to a transmission expert IMO.

Yep. Few years back I lost OD and 3rd gear at the same time. Both bands were destroyed. Limping it to the dealer on the interstate in 2nd gear at 4k rpm was super fun (with big-rigs flying by).

So I took my truck to the only transmission "specialist" in town, AAMCO. They hooked it up to their computer for free, which I am glad since I had already paid $98 at FORD for a diagnostic. I told them I didn't want to sway them but I had done numerous searchess online and that this OD servo clip problem kept coming up. Well they dropped the pan and valve body and this clip was indeed broken in 3 parts. The largest part was still intact, the 2nd largest was in the pan and smallest was in the valve body. They were scratching there heads because the largest part was still holding the OD servo piston in place and that they werent sure whether it was something else. We rolled the dice and they replaced the whole servo kit $32 and put everything back together and it worked!! Got my OD back. I guess there was was enough "play" in the portion of clip that was still intact that it caused the OD not to engage. Who knows? The original clip is not wimpy by any means however the aftermarket one installed was beefier. I guess only time and miles will tell whether this does or does not happen again.

I am going to give a week and then I am going to get on the phone or go back to Ford and give them a blasting I am also going to ask for my diagnostic money back if they want to keep me as a NON-TRANSMISSION WORK customer.

So AAMACO saved me a lot of money- Total cost for work- $309.79 compared to Ford's ~$3000!!!

Sorry for the long rant but what kills me the most was they didn't even drop the pan and investigate the servo clip issue. Surely Ford has that somewhere on a TSB!!! They relied soley on the computer diagnostic. WTF??
