Question New To Site. Tranny Issue 2004 F150. Advice Please

Hello, I posted this in the Tranny section as well. New here. Would be grateful for any and all advice.

Hello, New to this site.
I have an 2004 F150 5.4 Triton Engine.
The truck just hit 80k. I bought it from another Marine in excellent condition. Most of the miles previous to the ones I put all it were all highway miles. The truck is used to basically drive to and from my base daily.

One day last week out of nowhere the truck started to surge in 3rd gear. It happens randomly. The next day we took it to a local shop here and they informed us that the truck needed a new tranny and that 3rd gear was gone.

No one can tell me how this could have happened. Wondering if anyone here had this issue before or can advice me the best route to go. The truck is at home now while we do some research and figure out the best route to take.

The truck has had no other issues. It's an outstanding truck. The shop I took it too basically told me they could either drop a new one in there or rebuilt the current tranny.

Everyone I have spoken too seems to be stunned that the truck is not that old, and that it has such low miles for the year and that this could happen.

I would be grateful for anyone that could give me any info that could help me or their options on this.

Thank you to all that read and post on my thread.

I had the transmission go out in my 05 at 51k...Trans was fried!

Does it jerk after tipping in to overdrive, or is it a different symptom? If it jerks after tipping into overdrive, check the coils...I had this symptom and swore it was a transmission problem, but turned out to be a bad coil on cylinder 3. Big difference in price between a coil and transmission...

I have 75k on the replacement transmission...during the process of diagnosing the above problem, the dealer tore into the trans and found broken snap rings...and performed a TSB on the valve body...and did a filter/fluid...

I hope you are able to get your ride fixed with a minimal cost!

Regards!
