Stumbles after 900 dollars worth of repairs.

2005 5.4L F-150 SCREW with 93k miles.

Has been a great truck over the last few years, only needing a couple of wheel bearings and a wire that had some how gotten cut repaired.

Last week it started misfiring and stumbling badly when cold. Check engine light showed a P0300. After warming up it seemed to smooth out if i restarted the engine. Mechanic suggested I replace the plugs as it was time to do so anyway. Thankfully none broke.

Next day, issue became much worse. This time stumbling no matter if warmed up or not. This time it was P0022, P0300, plus a bunch of cylinder misfire codes.

So they replaced the vct solenoid. I got the truck back and it made it home fine and seemed a little odd but overall worked. Next morning, stumbling and having trouble again. Check engine light flashed a few times and disappeared. Once warm I restarted it and it smoothed out.

I loved this truck but this is getting old quick. I am going to have the codes pulled again but am almost out of ideas and am seriously hoping it is just a single cylinder misfiring that I can just replace the COP on.

I am open for any suggestions. Thanks so much.

Hello & Welcome!

Get the injectors checked!

2005's have this issue:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...ram-07m08.html

Do this ASAP - a hydrolock will crater yer engine.

Good luck!

Just had the codes pulled, mechanics are saying it is throwing the passenger side vct solenoid now. They then proceeded to curse a few times.

They are replacing the oil and filter to make sure that I was given the right type (changed ~300 miles ago) and if that doesn't resolve it they explained I have no choice but to replace that 2nd VCT also.

Crap. Crap. Crap.

My lincoln town car was unstoppable, I expected my truck to be same.

Sludge buildup causing valves to hang open.

Read about it here:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/11...-and-load.html

1. Loosen the 1 10mm and remove your air intake tube and remove it.
2. Remove the 4 10mm screws holding your air cleaner assembly/MAF to the Throttle body.
3. Soak the throttle body with Carb Cleaner. Open the blades and spray the inside, to clean up as much black as you can. Go through 1/2 bottle of carb and choke cleaner.
4. Reassemble and start and go for a drive. Start up will be a pain, its flooded, hold the foot to the floor and keep cranking. When it starts it won't be running on all cylinders (plugs are wet). Within 1 minute it will be good enough to drive, go for a drive. Within 2 minutes you'll see results.

Sounds ridiculous but its true, fixed my truck and I did the following with no remedy: Coils, plugs, injectors, both VCT's, 3 of 4 Oxygen sensors (need a special wrench to get Bank 1 #1 out).

A *LOT* safer way to clean the throttle body is REMOVE IT. You should also use throttle body cleaner, not carb/choke cleaner. Clean the MAF with MAF cleaner while you are at it.

I have depleted my "truck funds" for the week, if it isn't resolved by Friday I will go pay for the diagnostic for the injectors.

Argh.

Should not have to pay for anything. Ford is picking up the tab on any found faulty. Some folks here have paid for the preventative replacement of any remaining, as you really Don't want to go through this again.

If they don't find one faulty I will be out the diagnostic charge. If they do find one, will ford re-reimburse me for the damage to the parts that have been replaced even if it wasn't a ford shop? I didn't think they would.

Well - you could pull the injectors yourself to asses if any are leaking. Someone can chime in here (or you can search for it) as it's been done before.

On the question of the Ford shop - I don't know. Perhaps ask them?

Your symptoms appear indicative. If it were me, I'd take the hit, as if the engine hydrolocks, it's likely new short-block time. Meanwhile if it's dumping fuel yer destroying yer cats, and diluting yer engine oil.

Your call. Good luck.

I just had my 05 to dealer for fuel injector test. Still had same dust around the four injector rail bolts..... Going to try that myself. Thanks for the link. I also am thinking my VCT Solenoid(s) might be causing my problems.... although it isn't throwing a code.

Have you tried listening to the injectors to see. I they all sound the same. You can take a long screwdriver and put the tip on the injector and your ear on the other end you will hear the clicking and if you don't hear any on one it mint be bad. But they all should have the same sound.
