I have a 2004 2x4. when replacing the front rotors with hub and bearings, does the shaft need to be greased? "cheers"

I don't recall greasing mine, but that was about 2 years ago.
However, I will be getting a conversion kit for the next time I change them.

Can't turn them on a lathe, so I had to buy new ones. The backs can be turned though.

I am assuming you bought the conversion kit? I still have the once piece rotors.

Ford dealers have had "on the vehicle rotor turning" since you were a wee lad.

No it doesn't but it wouldn't hurt to put a very light film of grease on the spindle shaft. When I replaced a front wheel bearing on my SIL's '07 F-150 there was a little bit of rust on the shaft from a small amount of water getting past the seal. Don't grease it like it was a bearing though because it needs to not turn on that shaft. 295 ft. lbs. of torque should keep it from turning, but if it did you'd be buying a new spindle.
