Repainting plastic.
Repainting plastic.
Ok, so this weekend I have a project planned.
Repaint my wiper motor cover.
I was also thinking of repainting my bed caps and that plastic that covers the back bumper and door handles.
How would I go about removing these Items?
I know how to remove the mirrors and wiper motor cover, but not the bed rail caps and back bumper plastic cover along with door handles.
Are the handles going to be hard to do? Can you even remove the plastic that covers the rear bumper?
The mirrors and wiper cover should be easy enough, and I already changed mirrors once.
Never done the bed rail covers or the door handles.
I figured I could clean them up really good then hit them with a few coats of some krylon fusion gloss black with a final cover of clear.
Unless the handles are hard to remove, don't really want PTM and I don't want chrome covers.

Door handles are a little more work than the rest. If you are going to go to the trouble of removing them I'd have them painted at a shop. It's not something you really want to have to redo in a few years!

Its siting at 80K miles and I put 25-30K a year, at 25K miles a year thats gonna put me over 130K.
I doubt that I will care much as long as it runs good, it will be 8 years old and about half life span (if I am lucky).
I figure with a good cleaning and a few coats of black gloss then some clear over it they should last two years. Well as long as I am careful with the wax.
I may wash and wax it again then start tearing it down to paint it.
I gotta remove the door panel anyway for the mirrors, might as well take the door handle too.
So far I know how to remove these now,
door handles, wiper motor cover and the mirrors.
I still need to figure out the bed rail caps (they snap in/out?) and the black plastic on the rear bumper.
Anyone got a idea on these?
I got three cans of gloss back and 2 clear coats in krylon fusion.
If I have any extra I may give the wheel wells a good scrubbing and repaint them black too after I mask off the fenders.
I got a mothers power ball as well, and I will be sepnding time polishing the rims and restoring my tool box.

When I painted my tailgate cap I pulled the tailgate off and used newspaper and painters tape to cover everything but the plastic cap. The bed rail covers have 2 rows of clips that run the length of the rail. You can help the inside row by pushing up on the clips from under the bed rail on the inside as you pull up.
Here are a couple pics:

Thank Randyl9ll!
I was reading up on the rear plastic step thingy on the back bumper.
Seems its easier to just pull the bumper off completely then flip it upside down to get to the clips holding it on.
I may hold off for a while before I work it on, sounds like its a major job, and I can't afford to replace the thing (150sih) right now.
Kinda sucks though, its getting bleached out too, I might have time though if the weather holds Sat-Sun that give me two full days to work on it.

Its starting to get old, washing and waxing and sometimes a clay bar.
I really do need to pull the bumpers off and repaint them inside and work on the chrome. I hope the powerball takes some of the work out of it in that respect.
If the weather holds this weekend I am going to try to wash, clay and then wax the truck and then work on painting the plastic.
When money allows I am gonna pull the bumpers and paint inside them and under the truck.

I think painting will be the longest part next to restoring the tool box.
