Stock 2005 Trailer Hitch

Has 2 slots for a pin. A few questions,
#1. Why are there 2 slots and not just 1 (by slot I mean set of holes)
#2. Which slot should I use for a Reese Ball Mount
#3. Why does my 5/8" pin fit fine in the slots closest to the rear of the truck but not fit (only the right hole) in the rear slots -- I would think the further I can insert the mount the stronger it would be so I'm a little peeved I can't fit the pin through the 2nd hole?
#4. Should I just grind out the 2nd hole so the pin fits through?

I think some things are difficult for me just to amuse everyone else

Use the first one don't drill or grind anything out. i pull a 2 horse bumper pull trailer with my factory hitch and don't have any issues idk why you would want to alter it just go with the one the pin fits in

Appreciate the response, but what is the second set of holes for then? And why does my pin fit through the left side but not the right? I'm just confused and can't find any answer lol. By the way, my cotter pin literally fell off within a few miles of putting it on...thats always good.

If you lost the cotter pin, then it was either bent or not on correctly. Been using a hitch for over 20 years and never lost one. Even find them a bit tough to get on at times.

Yeah, was planning on buying a locking mechanism for it anyway, my main concern is about the slots and why the pin doesn't fit all the way through and whether anyone has an answer for me, if not only to quell my OCD?

Does anyone have this hitch? It came with my '05 FX4, and I really want to know wtf is going on here before I grind the hell out of it tomorrow morning to make it go through. fsulaxer, does your pin also not fit in the second set of holes? It just seems like it would be better through the second set of holes -- and even so, wtf are they for if not for a pin? just chains? And why does it fit through the left side and just not the right? Sorry, my OCD is killing me, I'm getting my truck ready for Colorado and currently live in Michigan, I want everything perfect before I make the trek and even the smallest detail is bugging me right now!

I too have an 05 with a factory hitch. After reading, I ran out to check and sure enough, I have two sets as well. i did a quick Google search and din't find much. I did see that Both Reese and Draw Tie both have two sets, and I saw Curts only had one set. No Idea what it's for??? I don't see how using the sencond set of holes would be any stronger...especially if you had to modify them to make them work. If you need more strength, it might be worth it to move up to a bigger hitch? I am interested in the intent of the second set though...

I'm not sure what the second set of holes is for. I have never seen anyone use them. I also would not 'grind' the hole out. The holes are there for a purpose, if a pin doesn't fit then that's not it

Well that's the thing though, it fits in one side fine, just not the other...so odd. I also cannot find anything online about it -- and my OCD is kicking in to the highest degree about it.

HOLY ****ING OCD! GET OVER IT!

mine has two sets, and when i stick my draw bar in i can only line the holes half up on the farther holes. i believe its just for longer drawbars, entensions, bike racks, etc.

i always try to go for the farther in holes, until i remember the drawbar aint that long. i too believe its "stronger" if u can get it in the farther ones.

OTOH, if u look at ur picture, i believe the weld between your square tube and drop is impeding the bar from going in any farther, and u probably have to wiggle the bar around to get the pin in and u dont have any wiggle room.

and DONT grind the weld flat so u can shove in in farther!!!

Perhaps there are tapered/stepped pins that would fit through the hole without modification?

Wow. As stated, use the first set of holes that fit. Don't grind anything and stop worrying.

Well they make 1/2" and 5/8" receiver pins, so I'm sure the smaller diameter hole is for the 1/2" pin.

its probably for a specialty hitch. don't ***** with it or you'll regret it when you find out what the smaller hole is for after you've drilled, ground, or whatever you do to it.
