Fuel gauge surprise today!
Fuel gauge surprise today!
Hey guys, just got my truck in Dec '11. Had 86,500 on it. Already noticing the plugs definitely need to be done, gonna do the coils too, due to some chugging at times on the low end when gettin back on the gas. I think i got this ironed out in a different post...
Today, I had roughly 1/4 tank of gas, stopped to fill all the way up. I start my truck up....and my fuel gauge doesn't move up a hair. Sooo, im thinkin either the sensor is stuck, or i was pumping air, lol/jk
So, as I am driving to work, I notice the gauge slowly creeping up when I am moving. When I stop it doesn't seem to move. After approx. 6mi to work, and when I arrive it was around 3/8th tank. I turn truck off and back on to see if it'd go, wouldnt. After work I drove and additional 10-12mi and it finally gets up to the full mark.
I am not 100% sure how the sensor/transmission of the signal gets to the gauge with these trucks, as I am new to Ford trucks. Anyone ever had this happen and figure out why? I am afraid it may never come up one time.
Also, the mechanics behind the sensor/delivery of signal, as to diagnosing the problem if no one has had this happen. Or is this "normal" sometimes?
Lil info, it is Michigan, so winters can be cold. It was rainy this morning, some freezing rain. Truck had a light coating on it this morning of ice that easily brushed off, for example. Though it was about 32*F when i left my house. Truck is a 2007 F-150, XLT 5.4L, S-crew, 4wd.
Thanks

Happened to mine a few months ago too and I had the keys in my pocket when I filled it up. That's the only time it's happened to me also. It was back to normal though by time I got home which is less than 1 mile from the gas station.
My explorer did this to me once shortly after I bought it and then never again, haven't had that issue with my truck.

Ok, thanks all, was just makin sure I shouldn't be looking into a fix here before it was permanent or something. Had a car like that once when i was 16, lol...had to figure out how much gas i had by mileage, LOL!
My truck does this intermittently...last time it happened was a couple of weeks ago. It took 2 days for the gauge to go to full, then the gauge came down very slowly as the fuel was consumed (150 miles before it even moved off of full...not possible on this truck as it only gets 300 miles per tank normally).
