ok so i have an 08 5.4 w/102k miles and a while ago i started hearing a whine from the engine bay. i would hear this only as rpm go up or down. (accelerating,decelerating) i replaced my belt along with my idlers, tensioner, alternator. each time wine never went away. got a stethoscope and found out the whine is coming from the power steering pump. i mean you can hear the whine through the reservoir and the pump itself. so replace the pump right? but how come the whine pitch doesn't change when i turn the steering wheel at a stand still or while driving?? rpms don't change either, nor does the steering wheel seem stiffer. maybe pump is good but pulley is bad?? or new fluid? i don't know. but i want to find out b4 doing all the work and spending big bucks on a pump.

 

Suck all the fluid out of the reservoir that you can with a turkey baster and refill with a good brand of synthetic ATF.

 

it didnt work also added lucas stopleak and drove for couple weeks and still the same. guess i need a new pump

 

Why did you add stopleak? All that does is make the fluid thicker, which is what you do NOT want........

Suck it out again and put JUST Mercon V ATF in there.
