2wd switching to 4wd by itself

I have a 2008 F-150 that started making a grinding noise. When I took it to the dealership they said that the truck was jumping from 2wd to 4wd and that's what was making the noise. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The truck only has 35,000 miles on it. They are ordering integrated wheel ends for it which will be under warranty but they also said the warranty has a $100 deductible. Does that sound right?

Try searching IWE and see if you have the same problems as other people.

had a similar thing happen to my 04 with 36,000 miles.
when i took mine to the dealership they of course left it set in the heated garage a few hrs before trying to work on it and said their was nothing wrong.
so after having the same problem a secoond time i fixed it myself.
it turned out that both of the actuators had moisture in them and when it was cold it would freeze and not allow the actuator to fully pull back off the splines properly and then while driving it would start to thaw and pull back a little more and start to slip and grind at a certain point.
i replaced both hub actuators a couple days later because they didnt stock them and had to order them.
then i went to the dealership and talked with the owner to let him know i was frustrated about their service and not fixing the problem.
that got me no where but my problems were resolved anywho.

Could be TSB 06-8-15.

This should not be the case on your MY truck, but the underlying issue could be similar with the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends )

TSB 06-8-15 has the IWE solenoid without a water shield on it, and water could get into the vacuum lines, causing the vacuum to the IWE to be lost, and the IWE gear to be part engaged.

You MY should already have the water shield on it, so I would next look to a cracked vacuum line or a cracked vacuum reservoir box.

There is a thread in the Technical Articles forum with a block diagram and I think it had the testing in it ( putting a vacuum gauge on each IWE and make sure it is holding vacuum ).

If it is going to be a few days before you can look at it, might want to pull and plug the vacuum lines to the IWE so they are not grinding with the gear part in / part out.
There are 2 lines to the IWE, 1 is the vacuum 1 is a vent, make sure you pull and plug the correct one ( the vent runs into the engine bay and is not connected to anything.
This will have the front wheels locked to the axle, but the front dive shaft will not be engaged. Truck will seem to drive funny, and your MPG will be lower, but you won't be grinding the IWE gears.
