shims are installed externally to the rear axle housing. the issue I found on my 2005 when it was new is that the axle brackets aren't in the correct position so they had to shim it to rotate the rear into the correct position. if i recall it was something around 17 deg of uncorrected angle and about 5 is the max you want.
