how much is a new motor?

how much is a new motor?

hey guys stupid question but on average whats the cost on a new 5.4 motor?

it has 170xxx miles on it and i was wanting to trade it in but these new trucks are expensive! i only have 3000 left to go so i am basically payment free and i want to save up for a new motor just in case that day ever comes.

my truck is running strong though i just got back from a 12 hour drive to colorado and back. truck got back just fine, although i did waste a lot of gas(more than usual)

Well the pertinent thing to ask is what is the market value of your truck? I only ask because @170K miles, you really have to think about many of the mechanical components needing replacement near the 200K mark. Transmission, suspension parts, differentials, wheel bearings, etc. You may end up dropping $5K into the truck (possibly more) in the next few years, so is the truck going to worth the amount of money you would have to put into it to keep it reliable? Just some things to think about, but I wouldn't be particularly worried about the truck falling apart by any means. If nothing else, keep saving back the amount of the truck payment each month into a savings account so that if you need to replace a major component, the cash is already on-hand. If you decide to just sell it and get another vehicle, you have a good down-payment available.

Interesting take on it I suppose. Well, in any case, I'd save back at least $5K to cover the cost of motor/installation as well as the other accessories that you'd want to replace on a 200K+ engine. (injectors, coils, water pump, belts/hoses, etc)

What about the new 6.2 motors? How much would those cost, including a new transmission, and everything needed, etc.? Would it even be possible to make it work in our older trucks? I replaced everything I could when I redid my suspension, so i wouldnt have to worry about that. Was wondering about this. Don't know if it's even possible/ worth it.

BTW, not to thread hijack, I was just wondering if its even feasible.

Anything is pheasible with enough money. Short story: you'd need a new ECU/wiring harness, as well as all of the other odds-n-ends (e-fans, etc). Would probably run you over $12K+ easy, as there aren't likely too many 6.2L reman'd engines around, so you'd be paying for a new one from Ford. Same with the ECU/ 6spd tranny.

A chevy owner at work looked into a motor for his pickup a year or two ago, I think it was a rebuilt he was interested in. It came with a warranty but only if installed by a "certified" mechanic. That was going to add a fair amount to the cost. IIRC he ended up with a used motor because of the total cost, Just something to check when figuring total cost. Jim.

Well sure, but probably not cheaper by much than another used STX. That STX with a new engine isn't going to be worth more than another grand or two to a used-car buyer, and will still need a lot of other items to be replaced. Again, it's whether you want to drop $7-8K on a truck to get most of the major components replaced/serviced, or do you want to take that money and buy the same truck with less than 80K miles on it for less than $10K and go on. Some will reaplce everything, some will take the money and run. No wrong or right answer really. Just a question of whether or not you want to deal with the hassle of all of the repairs/replacements vs. the unknowns of a used vehicle.

The stumbling block with keeping a high mileage vehicle running as a daily driver isn't necessarily cost -- it's downtime. After one or two major repairs where the vehicle has to be taken off the road for a week or two you will begin to see the wisdom of simply cutting your losses and moving on to a more reliable vehicle.....

Also, keep in mind that your vehicle never "spits the bit" in your driveway -- it does it at 9:30 PM on the coldest night of the year along a two-lane highway 40 miles from your home.....

I will comment because I am going through the decision making process of buying a replacement engine. I have found used engines with various mileage and 1 year p&l warranties for around 3200-3500. Remanufactured engine from engine suppliers for 3500-4000 and reman from Ford for 4500. These are prices after markup from local mechanic shop. The only way he will honor the warranties are if he gets his 15% markup on the engine. Hope this helps.

My truck only has 87,000 miles on it. I definitly don't need anything now, I was just curious of prices of putting that new 6.2 in it, as I only have the 4.6 now. I only asked out of curiosity to see if it was even pheasable. Simply an idea, nothing more.

BTW SoonerTruck I have an XLT, not an STX.

Sorry about that, I thought I saw STX somewhere. In any case, it's not much different in trim level, so that doesn't affect the used-car price much. If you had an FX4/Lariat/KR it'd be another story.

STX is pretty much a base model with an appearance package and only a 4.6.

An XLT has alot more available options and you can get the 5.4 in an XLT.

Ive got an XLT and its got alot of features that higher end trucks have like a power seat, reverse sensors, automatic headlights, etc.

Fine, but go check used truck prices. The XLT's are much more common than any other model I'd think, so the number of trucks to choose from drives the market price down. Either way, it's a toss up on engine replacement/tranny/etc vs just buying the same or newer truck with half the miles.
