2004 5.4 cam phaser replacement gone bad

I replaced the driver side cam phaser today. Didnt use the wedge tool and now the truck runs reel rough and seems to be out of time. Is there a simple way to fix this or do I need to take it to a shop to have the timing set? any help please????

No simple way. Front cover needs to come off and cams re-timed. If you are a decent mechanic, have the tools / facilities available and have the manual in hand, no reason you can't do it. If not, it's off to the shop for ya....

Are you serious.... No disrespect but this is a good example what happens when you try to cut corners. You have to retime the whole motor.

Thumbs down

On one of the bike boards I post to, we have an expression we use when someone screws up for no other reason than they failed to follow a procedure and toasted a motor, and that expression is " someone needs to weld his tool box shut"

The easiest way out would be to tear the timing cover off and re-time everything, unless you get a good tech that can get the crank to a known good reference point without tearing the timing cover off, then verify the cam base timing.

Either way, based on your reluctance to follow the manual, and rent, buy, or make a critical tool needed to perform the service, I'd say send it out before you blow the engine by having valves kiss pistons, unless that has already happened.

Whoa whoa whoa...before everyone jumps down his throat are you absolutely sure its the timing. Did you check all the plug wires and coils? Are there any disconnected vacuum lines? Check the basics first.

Does anyone even know if the engine can run being one tooth off on the timing chain because that can equate to about 6-7 degrees. If he did get it off more than that then there could be valve damage.

Check the small stuff first though.
