Engine noise on 5.4?

Hi Guy's,

I've had my 07 Supercrew 5.4 with 102K miles on it for a month now and it runs well no stalling, bit of a lumpy idle when hot but still only around 600 rpm. I have noticed that on both left and right of the engine when idling I can hear a ticking, I can't hear it when inside but with he hood up it is noticeable. It sounds like mechanical engine noise but I wanted to check it is normal.
I Have put the truck on synthetic when I bought it and did think then it had a little more motor noise. And it is more noticeable when the engine is hot. Tomorrow I am switching back to Ford oil and a Ford filter so I will see if it helps.

Any info greatly received,
Regards,
Peter

If it is also only noticeable while the hood is up it may just be noisy injectors.

If it is a light ticking noise, that is just the electronic injectors openning and closing. For the idle, has the MAF and throttle body been cleaned. How many miles on the fuel filter?

Hi,

It is a light ticking but I did notice a louder tick when parked on an incline and the engine was started from HOT or warm. Also very slight knock at idle with a warm motor. I've just got back from switching back to Motorcraft 5w20 and ford OE oil filter. The knock at hot idle is almost gone, the engine feels smoother and less harsh under load, it is also quicker to drop off on the over run, if that makes sense. The very light ticking that is evenly spread left and right would make sense that it would be injectors. I've no idea what the fuel filter has on it and no I haven't cleaned Mass Air Flow sensor or throttle body. To be honest I'm a little nervous the last mass air flow sensor I cleaned was in a chevy V6 and it suffered from idle problems after that. Does it really help?

Regards and thanks guys for the input,
Peter

Yep, it does help.
Here is how to:

If the throttle body has not been cleaned, it will need it for sure, too.

Just a side note about using the OEM Oil Filter, there is definately a difference. My engine ticks and clicks when I put in a Fram Oil Filter like I have used for years... The MotorCraft Oil Filter quiets everything back up!

Get the Fram's and oil additives out of the oil. It's simple, use a quality oil with a good filter and it'll be fine. Even do analysis on the oil if you really want to know. The anti drain back valve on Frams isn't great and Lucas is a base stock oil with a gear oil type visc that foams.

I've always not like the very progressive throttle on my supercrew it all of a sudden has a big lump of power even when gently de-pressing the throttle. It makes pulling away on ice a miserable task. Today with BLUEJAYS insistence I cleaned the MAF and that trait has gone, I can now pull away more gently (when conditions dictate) and I do have a slightly more smooth hot idle. So thanks BLUEJAY again for your top advice...
Regards,
Pete
