easier way to check, if your air filter is a rectangle sitting directly above the motor it's a 5.4. if it's a big round thing its a 4.6

edit: pictures
5.4, says it on the intake

4.6

Just got all 8 of my spark plugs on my 04 fx4 out wihtout any breaking!! The job took about an hour and half and a few bloody knucles..

Here is how i did it with an IMPACT...

- You can use a standard 9/16 deep socket for the plugs. What i did was just take the rubber piece out of an extra 5/8 plug socket i had and cut a slot out of it and it slipped right into the 9/16 socket and worked like a charm.

1) let car sit after driving for about 1/2 hour so it was just warm to the touch.

2) While cooling down, i removed the PCM and the bracket, as well as air dusted the whole engine and all the spark plug holes out.

3) Used 7mm to remove each coil boot and lined up to the side.

4) With engine warm i got my 1/2 inch impact and put it on the lowest setting as well as turned my compressor down to about 60psi and just went at each plug.. Once you push the trigger hold it until the spark plug comes out!!

5) for the back two plugs i used an extension and then a swivel and did the same thing as the front six, but i just made sure to hold the extension and socket straight so that i didnt break the plug or kill the threads.

6) Smiled and sat back for a second knowing that i got all 8 out without any breaking..

7) I used Motorcraft SP515 plugs. I made sure to put anti-seize on the end cap(NOT on the threads) and then installed them each and put it all back together...

So nice to finally be done with it!!
