what air pressure should i run in a 285/70/17 load range E tire
I have the same tires... and run them at 50PSI.... seems like a smooth enough ride, but I only have 1500 miles on them, so I have no clue about wear.
I will say, that I ran mine @ 50psi for the first 10-15K miles or so, and I started hearing the "wah-wah" sound that aggressive tread makes, but only when I was cornering. I then decided to reduce mine to 40psi for a while to see if the sides of the tread would wear down back even and stop the noise. So far it's worked, but I think running @ 50 psi unloaded all of the time might have caused the tires to wear unevenly, making the centers wear down quicker. Nothing scientific here, I didn't even attempt to measure tread depth, but I am happy the noise has stopped for the most part.
This isn't a simple question to answer. It's going to make a big difference is your tire is P-metric or LT-light truck rated tires. This might help you decide what you need. Running 35-40 psi in an LT rated tire is asking for disaster.
Exactly, I was hoping to steer the OP into researching why the door placard on psi recommendations, intended for his OEM p-metrics, no longer applies.
