Spark Plug Mayhem 5.4 06 f150

I followed all steps i found on this site and another regarding spark plug removal on the 5.4l v8 in an 06 f-150 70k miles. I was dealing with an engine code of cylinder 3 missfire, so my plan was to change all 8 plugs and coils. I am currently halfway thru and he's what i have.

all plug wells were soaked for no less then 12 hours and all plugs were turned 1/2 turn out 1/4 turn back in to allow the penetrating oil to seep thru.

plugs 1-4 (pass side) all came out in 1 piece

plugs 5 (drivers side) came out fine

plugs 6 7 and 8 is another story

it shows not how to remove the lower sleeve when the porcelain is broken off inside the lower piece.
researching the tool used to extract the broken plugs has left me at a standstill due to the way the plugs broke off on my vehicle. [IMG][/IMG]

Sorry to hear about that.....

The way I do them....

Use chevron techron in 2 tanks of gas before plug change

Upon changing them

Brake loose the plugs 1/8th turn each then fill plug wells with carb cleaner

Wait an hour or two to soak

Get the cordless impact and zip them out.....

The shop where I work part time has a breakage rating of 46 out of 928 plugs changed

I'm having difficulty figuring out what is still in the head. Is it the metal sleeve and part of the porcelain?

You need the lisle tool to get the metal heat shield out but first you'll use it to get the porcelin out.

Ok, use the Lisle tool and just follow the instructions. You push the porcelain down far enough to thread a couple of thread into the sleeve and pull it out.

ok so i do need the tool, however the instructions say to use a vaccum plug to stop metal shavings from falling down. how do i do this with the porcelain in the way. the vaccum cap wont reach the bottom of the metal sleeve while the porcelain is inside it.

Modify you vacuum hose with a smaller tube and vacuum out cylinder after both pieces are removed....that's the easier way I've found....

The small tube you need has to be able to fit through the spark plug hole....

Just follow the instruction that come with the lisle tool. As Bluejay said you are just pushing the porcelain down far enough to thread the extractor into the metal sleeve. You shouldn't be crushing the porcelain causing small pieces to break off.
