2006 f150 starter issues....

hey all!

i saw a couple posts related to this issue a couple years ago but i want to see if anyone knows of this being a persistant issue, or if there is a clear diagnosis to this problem.

heres the jist. basically one morning i went out to start my truck and nothing happened. prior to this it started like a champ no signs of the starter wearing out. everything had a good charge, radio worked lights turned on etc.. every time i turned the key, i could hear a click down by the passenger side fuse box. i checked the relay and fuse and everything checked out fine..

i've had a couple techs tell me that even though everything looks charged it still might need a solid jump from a truck or battery charger (i had a jump from a small car) they also said it could be the solenoid or a bad connection, which i looked and the connections seem fine, no corrosion.

anyway, just looking for some tips before i take the plunge and try to replace the starter myself, or bring it in. ford quoted me $326 + $75 if i wanted a diagnosis..

thanks!

Had this same problem myself! Nothing like going out for work and truck dont turn over! took it to a local garage and they replaced the starter silnoid and that wasnt it so I took it back again. Long story short it was due to the cab leaking and causing a lot of corrosion in the fuse box itself (door connections leak and somwhere else if I remember correctly) and behind it and theres a fix/kit from Ford apparently...So they replaced the fuse box and waterproofed it and sealed the door connections and something else and not a problem since. Nice little chunk of change for this too I might add...Should have been a recall if you ask me

Get the battery tested first. 5 years is doing pretty good on a factory battery these days. Most auto parts stores can test them free in the parking lot.

update:

had my truck towed to ford. techs claim they don't know what the problem is but they'll start with replacing pcm or ecm for $1700.. i don't have that kind of money, and i sure don't have that kind of money for them to just eliminate possibilities of what the actual problem might be!

any other ideas?

Yes, find a REAL mechanic! If a Ford dealer is going to start throwing YOUR money at it, you definitely need a new dealer (or ind. mechanic) Most likely a new dealer. That's absurd!
