Need help diagnosing noise
2004 F-150 Super Cab
4x4
65k miles
The noise sounds like a rubbing (i.e. its not a clank, or grinding noise)
Don't notice it with the windows rolled down (i.e. not loud enough to hear over engine noise.
The frequency of the noise is directly tied to speed, and I only really notice it a low speeds (0-25 mph) (probably because at higher speeds it blends in with engine noise.
Jacked the truck up, front wheels turn without hard spots in the brakes from a warped rotor, no play in the wheels either.
Switching into 4x4 doesn't take it away, so its not an IWE problem.
Shifting into neutral doesn't take it away.
No change in the noise for engine load vs no engine load.
I rode in the bed while my wife drove around the block and listened at the rear wheels and didn't hear it. Heard it more toward the center of the bed.
I've checked to see if there are any heat shields rubbing against the drive shaft, and that’s all clear.
Any ideas on what to check next?
Thanks!
