Heavy amount of grease, don't know where it came from
I was installing my new brakes and rotors I got from Brake Performance and on the drivers side right on top of the lower control arm was a good amount of heavy thick grease, like someone had take a grease gun and shot a load on top.
I could figure out where it came from. Anyone have any ideas?

The boots can tear easily around where the clamps are.
From what I gather, it is easier to purchase a whole new or remanufactured half-shaft.
Mine had leaked a bunch of grease from around the clamp area. I didn't even notice until I installed my lift. I put some caulking on it to seal the tear. I'm sure it is missing a bunch of grease in there somewhere and I didn't attempt to replace any, but I haven't noticed any ill effects. I will just buy a reman half-shaft if I ever have troubles with it.

Mine got a tear and I bought a re manned one from o reileys for 60 bucks. They take yours as a core but it was an easy decision as they are still a ford part just re manned. Heck ford here charged 65 for just the boot.

I haven't been able to find a guide on how to replace the half shaft specifically for our year truck. Any special tools needed or is it common sense once you get in there?
I can't quite remember how I did mine. I know on the trans side there is just like eight bolts. On the hub side it seems to me like there was just a snap ring and it came out. I know I removed my rotor and that was not necessary as I was just trying to figure it out at that point. But yeah definitely go with an o reileys re manned one. Plus they have a year or lifetime warranty. I can't remember but I haven't needed it so it doesn't matter to me. -brent
Before it reached it's 105 peek today I went out this morning and investigated the boot and all items around it. I found no crack, there was no grease on the boot or any where around the shaft. I pulled back on every rib on the boot and checked top to bottom and couldn't find a thing. I'm perplexed if it's even where the grease may have come from.
