try tapping the electric motor on the back side of your transfer case with a hammer.

Sounds like your Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) motor is getting lazy. It's pretty typical. The motor is located on the back side of your Transfer Case - which is located just behind your transmission. You'll see on driveshaft heading out the back to your rear axle and one heading forward to the front axle. The motor has a bundle of wires on a connector coming out of it.

The tapping with a hammer trick sometimes works to temporarily wake one of those bad boys up, but generally speaking, it's time to replace it.
