Engine runs fine til CEL comes on

I have had issues with my 2006 5.4 Supercrew since last November.

It started with running badly and we changed the plugs & COPs. Still had problems, so checked the cats & they were busted up inside so I gutted them. It seems to run a little better for a while.

Next, cleaned MAF, replaced an O2 sensor, cam sensor, nothing seemed to worked so I took it to a repair shop. It was idling really low and you had to two foot it at a stop.

It's been the shop for over 2 months now trying to get repaired. He ended up replacing the timing chains & the cam phasers. On the initial startup said it ran great, took it on a test drive, CEL came on & boom ran like crap again. Stop & restart it, runs fine til the CEL comes on. If he'd gotten the timing off, it would run bad all the time, wouldn't it?

The guy working on it is very good on almost anything he works on, but don't know if this Triton engine is too much.

Before we took it in, checked the fuel rail pressure cause some thought it was the fuel pump, but the pressure was good.

Any clues or help would be greatly appreciated.

How about the injectors? Not sure if your engine was one of the ones affected by the injector issue.

Could this be a problem? the O2's after the cat could be giving a wild reading because there is nothing there.

I might be wrong but I was under the impression that a non-working or no cats at all with out a tune would cause a truck to issues like you are.

I had a friends 05 taurus that would run like crap when the CEL would come on sporatically. We took it to autozone and the code that came up was something to do with the ecu or something major engine related. I searched the code on the internet and found someone on a taurus forum that said they had the same code and to check the fuses under the hood and we found one that was loose and he hasn't had a problem with it since. I don't know if this would have anything to do with yours, just putting it out there for you.

Sorry, was away from the computer for a few days. I don't have the exact codes, but was told it was for the cams. Anyway, a sensor for the cam phasers(?) has been ordered and has possibly fixed it. Crossing fingers. Test driving again today and hopefully getting back my truck after almost 2 1/2 months.

As far as the gutted CATS, I've been told it will run a little rougher, but will run. It was barely running after the CEL comes on.

Thanks for the replies & suggestions.
