Damaged Finish On Factory Chrome Step Bar

I washed my truck today for the first time since I bought it. I noticed that the step bar on the passanger side has some spots on it that seem to be etched into the metal and have eaten the chrome finish off. It's almost as if something corrosive dropped on it. I cleaned it up the best I could but there still seems to be some exposed metal. What is the best way to seal these spots up while maintining good looks? Is there such a thing as chrome touch up paint. Below are pic's of before I cleaned the chrome and after. TIA

I got a spot like that on mine to. I just assumed it was from salt sitting on it during the winter. Im not to concerned about mine but I might just get them line-x'ed or something.

Try some #0000 steel wool on the inner side where it's not too visible and see if that helps. Use some light oil, even veggie oil as a lubricant.

There is chrome paint/touch up... but it'll never match properly.

BTW, you said this is the first time you've washed it... when did you get it?! Cause if it's an '06, and this is her first bath, then SHAME ON YOU!!! LoL.

I have an 08 that has done the same thing. I already had one side replaced under warranty. I may go back again before warranty is up and have them both replaced this time. I don't know what causes this.

Thanks for the input guys. Warranty is a thing of the past for this truck. I bought it used a month ago and today is the first day it's been warm enough for me to hand wash it. If I'd owned this truck since new and I was only washin' it for the first time today I'd be too embarrased to post on this forum lol.

Where would I pick up chrome touchup paint? I googled it but didn't come up with anything solid. Even if it didn't match exactly it would look better than it does now the the raw metal would be protected.

I have small spots like this on my 2006 as well, seems like a common problem.

I have used mothers chrome polish on the spots and they do get better, it buffed out about 50% of them. For me I only have 2 spots that are "bad" but they are livable for me.

If I keep the truck for long and they get worse, I would just bring the bars to a body shop to get re-chromed. That would be the only way to really fix it.

I had that happening on my '08; had it professionally detailed last week and he cleaned them up really nicely. I don't know how or what he used but they look a lot better.

He also managed to get the yellow lab hair out of my black interior.
