Extended waranty

Hi all. I recently bought an '07 F150 with the the stx package. I love the truck & have only had it for less than a week. It has 69,000 mi. on it & is in great condition. While at the dealership the salesman kept pestering me to buy an extended service contract. The cost? $2400 for 4 years. I didn't take the bait, but he said I can purchase the contract later by financing it. I'm not sure if I can mention the name of the co., but the contract is supposedly backed by Ford. What do you guys think? Thanx.

I purchased the extended warranty thru the ford dealer when my truck hit 35k. I just had the 3-36mo coverage from the factory. I upped it to 100k coverage over 36m (driving 20k per year avg would get me close without paying for a non-useable 12mo). I paid 1080.00 for mine w/the 50.00 deductable. Its the 'Extra Care' package that covers quite a few things.

I'm at 72k now and I'm certain the warrant has paid for itself. I've had the right manifold, throttle body, and fuel controler modual replaced thus far.

Call / email Troy Dietrich at Ford of Greenfield.

This is what I got last year.

Ford ESP ExtraCARE
plan for 4 yrs / 48,000 miles with the standard $100 deductible for $1395.00 on your 2007 F150 4x2. (assuming current mileage is between 60,000 and 80,000).

It does sound expensive. Also keep in mind these warranty companies make money by not having to pay out. Just because you bought the warranty doesn't mean they will willingly pay out.

Thanx all. It's the Ford ESP ExtraCare package. I looked over the paperwork again & the dealer wants to charge me $2550 for 4 yrs./48,000 mi. coverage. Plus sales tax which will be another couple hundred or so. Even though my truck is a 4x4 I'm wondering why the dealer wants to charge me almost $600 more than what I was quoted online from Ford. Is this dealer trying to rip me off? Can this warranty be purchased directly or do I have to go thru a dealer?

They are just trying to make as much as possible off you. If you "haggle" I bet they will come off that price, but I'd look elsewhere. I'm pretty sure to get the Ford ESP, you have to go through a dealer, but it can be any dealer.

That's exactly what I did. I live in Va. but bought my warranty from a dealer in MA (Ford of Greenfield).

very true statement. i bought a 04 115k on it and i bought just the powertrain warranty for 90 days for $350 with a $100 dollar deductable from the dealer. needless to say my truck started having trouble and i took it in under the warranty and i had to wait areoun 5 days for the warranty adjuster to only say 'theres nothing wrong with this truck'. so that weekend i wanted the head tech to drive my truck and tell me then there is nothing wrong with it. haha he brought my truck back later friday night becayse he was affraid it would leave him stranded or stall out and cause him to wreck.
after all the smoke cleared i am having a new engine putin my truck for $100

you used to be able to buy an esp plan directly from ford. check ford.com and follow the warranty link. you will need your vin to navigate through it. i did mine that way when i bought my 04 new. i didnt want to add the price of the esp into my loan, why pay interest on esp that doesnt take effect for 3 years except for the rental coverage. i was able to buy my esp through ford, no interest and made monthly payments. i waited until my 3/36 was just about to expire and made the purchase over the phone. that was in 07 so it may have changed.

I think you will find both sides of the story. Those who used it and those who didn't purchase the extra protection and never needed it. In general these insurance packages are huge moneymakers for the dealers, the other clue you mention is you can "purchase it later by financing it". Financing is the other big money maker for dealers....Maybe just stick that 2500 in the bank for that rainy day if you can....At the very least get all the nitty gritty fine print on the agreement so you know going in what they will and won't cover.

When I purchased the explained above, I got a quote thru the website on what it'd cost me. It was 400.00 less then the dealer offered it to me when I purchased the truck. I went into the salesman who sold me the truck and told him I wanted to buy the warranty from them, as I was going to have them do all the work on the truck, but there was one problem. This 400.00 price difference, he said thats no problem, you've done your homework, he did the paperwork up, and matched the online price. Away I went. I've more then paid for it in repairs by now I am sure, and still have 30k miles left to go. I'm thinking I'll ditch the truck at 100k as it scares me with no warranty...

Maybe dont spend $2400, but getting an extended waranty is a good idea. I have an '05 FX4 w/ 74,900 miles. I had a 75k powertrain warranty. Between 69K and present, I have had the cam phasers replaced, the transmission had to be re-built TWICE, and its back in the shop because I have a slight popping noise and feeling upon acceleration and the transfer case is leaking fluid pretty badly. Running total value of repairs is around $3800 and growing (dont know how much the transfer case would have cost to fix since its still @ the shop) All this repaired, and 3 different rental cars (so far) for a grand total of $100 out of pocket.

I purchased mine when I bought my truck used with 38K on it....didn't use it at all and sold it back for a hefty penalty. If you get one make sure you are going to keep it, they are not worth selling back.

I never used mine and you have to keep up on preventative maintenance or they will not cover warranty claims. I have needed to pay for a new flex plate and starter, my caliper was cracked but I put new brake parts on anyway and my TPS sensor went out but it only cost me $70. Everything else has been regular maintenance and Ford covered my failed injector. I about broke even when it came to my warranty by pulling the money out of it. It is nice to have that extra feeling of insurance though.

I'm at 80,200 and she's running strong

Well I bougt one with mine, used it for quite a few things. Then the inspector came out and voided the warranty due too oversize tires, programmer, air intake and exhaust. So now I wasted $1k just food for thought if you want to do any mods.

Damn, that sucks. I was lucky, they didnt say anything to me about my oversized tires. I did take the CAI and programmer out before bringing to the dealership so they never knew about those
