Transmission malfunction came on this morning.

This morning I backed down the drive, put it in park, got out and put some letters in the mailbox, hopped back in, and put her back in reverse. I received an error that said "Enging fail mode" or something like that and then it would flash over to "transmission malfunction". I backed out, pulled up on the side of the road, turned it off, back on, and warning was gone. I then drove the almost 20 miles to work with no problems. The only thing I've done recently was clean the MAF about two days ago.

There should be a code to pull to give you an exact error. Try autozone or one of those places that will read your code for free. I don't think the MAF would give you a transmission failure warning though.

I actually just got an edge evolution tuner today. I plugged it in at lunch, but it didn't see any error codes. Does it pull from the archived log on the machine?

You need a high end scanner to pull transmission codes. An Edge can't, and neither can the cheap handhelds that the parts stores use.

It might be a good idea to clean the throttle body.

Check the transmission forum thread on overheating transmission.

Sounds like your might be close to mine although I didn't get any engine faults.

Short version was ended up being the valvebody. Hope that helps.
