Finally Fixed my CLUNK/BUMP/CLANK!!!
Finally Fixed my CLUNK/BUMP/CLANK!!!
Thought I would share my story about my Clunk!
I gained an annoying Random Clunk a few months ago and its been driving me crazy! Ive read just about every thread on this problem and finally I came across a few old ones that described my clunk, seems like most of the threads dont finish with a resolution to the problem, So I wanted to share what I did to fix my Clunk so maybe it will help others!
Truck: 05, SCREW, 4X4, 6" TC Lift, Air bags, Traction bars, 65,000 mi, owned 4 years!
Ok, A Clunk appeared in the rear a few months ago, very random, I had a hard time replicating it! It clunked sometimes when turning, somtimes on bumps, like I said very random but getting worse!
The things I checked where;, Driveline(New U-joints, Greased Slip yolk), Airbags(retighten, lower, raise), Leaf springs(Binding, Greased slip pad things), Traction bar (Had a single and it broke when towing 10K LBS, built newtraction bars with new bushings and no binding, everything lubed and tight), Body (Checked all body mounts), and nothing! I still had the clunk and it was not getting any better with anything I did!
So Finally I read about some guys having a clunk like mine in the shackles, they said to tighten them and it will go away. I thought; I dont think this will help my Clunk but Ill try it anyway, I had to wait a few days due to the high temp here has been under 10 degrees lately, so as I thought about it I thought it might be it! today the temp outside is around 40 degrees (Heatwave LOL) so I got out the sockets with breaker bar and torque wrench, and they where not loose at all but I did get about 1/4 turn out of most of the shackle bolts, I thought well this probably didnt help as they were not loose!
about an hour later I drove my daughter to her friends house for a party and The Clunk was gone!! I drove about 50 miles more trying to make the clunk happen but I was unable to duplicate it again! Im very happy about this but I will remove all the bolts this spring to inspect, Grease and replace any that need it!
So It was the Shackle bolts!!
