4.6 to 5.4 swap thoughts
I have searched and have come up short, let me just start off by telling eveyone my reasoning for doing this and not "trading in the truck" lol it has come to my attention that one of our company stx 4x4 4.6l f-150's one of the cylinders went out on it (just out of warrenty i was told and its an 08), and for us getting the truck fixed isnt really a smart decision, because one of our crews will be without a truck for over a week and we cant have that, much easier to just order a new truck and trickle down a older truck to a different department, anyhow enough about the corporate bull! Being we own the company i was thinking about taking the truck to leave at our summer home up in maine, sure would be nice to have something i can load wood, garbage, and what ever into and not my 2010.
being the truck needs an engine i figured i may as well put in the 5.4 while im at it or at least the short block and keep the 4.6's heads. ive got a pretty decent laundy list of what i think needs to be done in order to make it work.
-Transmission will bolt up, as only internals are different
-not sure about the coil setup as the 5.4 and 4.6 use different ignition systems, however im pretty sure if i keep the 4.6 heads, and such i can tune around any issues with sct advantage III
has anyone sucessfully completed this swap? or should i just throw another 4.6 in and call it a day in that case i may put in a 32v 04 cobra motor because i happen to have a complete engine with the blower from a friends wrecked car(id rather the 5.4 only because the cobra motor i had plans for a restomod notch)
well cheers and thanks

Have you thought about a stroker rebuild? A guy I work with did that with his 4.6L Mustang. Kept the original block and (3V) heads. His displacement is about 4.9L and HP at the rear wheels is about 400. There are probably other volume options out there...
Why don't you pull the 4.6, tear it down, and see what actually happened? It may be a relatively cheap repair.
Swapping a 5.4 into an 08 is not as easy as it sounds, and do you want a whole new set of issues with the 3V engine?

it just broke a ring and lost compression in cyl 8, they prolly didnt change the oil in the poor truck, which is why im a little worried about reusing the old engine without completely tareing it down and rebuilding it, i have a set of already ported heads from MMR with big valves so i may just wind up purchasing a short block or just re-building the block that in the truck, plus it shouldnt cost me much more then 700$ or so and thats doing it correctly.
As GLC has (correctly) stated, there's a whole lot more to swapping motors in these trucks than most folks know about. Did you know that 4.6 liter trucks come with an 8.8" rear end and the 5.4 liter trucks come with a 9.75" rear end for instance? I too would suggest that it's going to to be far less expensive to slap another 4.6 in there. Besides. it's really not all that bad of a motor.

No one has successfully swapped a 3 valve 5.4 into a 11th gen truck that did not come with one. I've long speculated that swapping a 2 valve 5.4 would be far easier to do. You could even use the 4.6 tune temporarily until a proper tune could be written.
wow, the ignorance in this thread amazes me...
#1 a 2 valve 4.6 to 2 valve 5.4 is a really simple swap
#2 you could use your current intake manifold (with adapter plates) and ECM
#3 new mid-pipes and your current oil pan and you'd all set to go

oh ik i could put in a 5.4 2v no problem i could also put in a 32v navigatior 5.4 as well alot of us guys with the 99-04 gt's have done this, its a really simple swap, as well as a lighting 5.4 2v shouldnt be too bad as well
thought id chime back in and say i went to go pickup the truck from my work, saw the check engine light was on ran the codes through my xcal, and what do you know it was a bad cop wire....took a hot min to fix it, the ford dealer who i will not mention wanted to replace the engine due to a blown cylinder....needless to say we will not be using that dealer ever again.
