Difference between cold start tick and cam phasor tick

So I have been trying to work this out. I have a tick, mainly when I try to start it cold (20f and below), and I think it goes away.

I have read lots about the cold tick being normal and the 'diesel' tick sound that people relate to cam phasors. Mine seems to go away when I warm up. So that leads me to assume that I just have the cold start tick.

Perhaps we should sticky something about this, I know lots of people know they have a tick, but are not sure which one it is.

My V6 makes that tick in the cold too... once its been running for a few minutes, it goes away. From what I understand, the CP issue starts making noise after a few minutes.

Cold start ticks can be caused by a Fram oil filter.

x2, CP will not tick until operating temp is reached. when it does (and this could differ), mine was most noticable @ 1100 rpms
