Mileage adjustment - cluster swap - dealer issues.....

I bought an FX4 cluster to go into my XL truck since the airbag bulb was out, the brake bulb stuck on, and the fact I wanted a tach and nicer looking cluster.

I put it all in on wednesday night, took a pic of the old miles before removing the old cluster, and a new pic 20 minutes later showing the new miles. I drove the truck 8 miles on a taco bell run, and straight to the dealer to get the PCM flashed to "as built", and to get the mileage reprogrammed (I have 131k, new cluster shows 66k). I brought the old cluster with me as asked by the dealer, but when I get there this morning they told me they probably can't put the miles to the correct amount for me....grrrrr.

They call and say it is ready to pick up, and couldn't do anything on the miles. Get this.....reflash PCM, activate cruise, and install a new door check-arm - $300. THAT alone has my blood boiling, but here is my question - since they wont correct the mileage, I assume I will have to pull the new one , and send it along with the old one to get updated (meanwhile doing without my truck for that long). Now....will since it went to the dealer for service with different mileage that they refuse to correct after bending me over a barrel on price....will this be noted on the trucks history? Meaning, will my truck be permanently noted as having an odometer discrepancy? How bad does a TMU (true mileage unknown) screw my trucks resale? I know it has a lot of miles, and I am NOT trying to defraud the mileage in ANY way....but I don't want to take a hit financially due to anyone else's incompetence.

Not happy....

When i traded in my mustang, I had an issues with TMU. What had happened was a shop i took my car into had put down the wrong mileage for the car when they entered the information into the computer. When the carfax for my car was pulled, it showed the discrepancy. It affected my trade in value by 50%, meaning that they originally were going to offer me $4000 for the car, but would only give me $2000. I had to call the shop and get everything worked out. Hope this helps.

Flippin' wonderful. I asked if that would end up on my title as a TMU, they said no. Of course, a carfax will throw that wrench in though.

Adding insult to injury, I made a note on the order for the mechanic to please verify the door lights/dingers work, and the AC compressor kicks on. No lights/dings, and I am not hearing the compressor. $300 in labor, and the only thing different is (other than cruise works) the fact I will end up with a TMU vehicle.

Any advice on this?

every time i've had my truck serviced at a dealer, the service record shows up on the carfax.

also, I am also considering a gauge swap. I just want to put the xlt cluster in that has the tach in place of my XL tachless cluster.

Is there a place I can send it to be reprogrammed? Or do I have to find a shop that will do this?

After the odometer is reprogrammed, obviously they need to put the pcm info in and stuff. what do they need to do to get the door chime and lights, etc to work?

That's why I would never give a dealer a blank check (written estimate ahead of time that was accurate) and only approval of any additional by phone call. That's the way it's been in this state for many years. And if they find they need to exceed the OE, and don't get at least the phone approval with date and time of call, you don't have to pay 'em for anything exceeding the OE.

Reflashing the PCM to "as built" should make everything work fine. They apparently didn't do it right on mine.

You will have to send both the new, and old clusters to a speedometer shop...I guess there is one in Detroit (area) that does it for about $100. You will be without your truck while it is getting done, but I've read complete turnaround is about a week.

I guess I will call them to let them know it needs to come back due to some things not working, and let them know I am sending the cluster in to get the mileage done RIGHT first. I will at that point beg them to correct the mileage on their record so it doesn't tank my truck.

i wonder, would I be able to swap the circuit board from my current cluster into an xlt cluster? or are those completely different?

Dealer is telling me:

An FX4 cluster will not work right with an XL - the issues I am having....no dome light, no dinger, no AC compressor is what you get from swapping out the wrong one.

They DID write down the wrong mileage after they told me they could update the odometer to actual mileage. They decided after I brought it in that they couldn't, and wrote down the wrong mileage on their service order. They're telling me they don't think they can fix that now.

Fuming pissed......
