04 5.4 P0022 Rough Idle after engine warm.

New to the Forum here from Northern Ontario Canada.

I would first like to say I have searched high and low for answers to the 2004-05 5.4 rough idle problems and have found few answers, many threads dieing off with no conclusion to the problem.

Hopefully mine will end differently.

I have a 2004 F-150 FX4 Regular cab stepside with the 5.4 L Engine

The odo currently reads 241 xxx KM (kilometers)

Here is the story.

Changed the oil last saturday using Castrol Synthetic 5w-20 as specified and regretfully a fram tough guard tg2 Filter. Sunday evening on my way to fuel up the truck it was missing under load. Almost to the point of being undriveable. Got to gas station put fuel in, still was missing part of the way home. Took it to hockey later that night, worked okay, no missing.

Monday, drive to work and when I come to park rough idle starts, turn key off and restart, runs okay. Park it and go to work. Research issues I was having all day monday untill I come to the conclusion that I need to get a motorcraft filter asap. On the way home from work I pick up the filter and also stop at partsource to get my codes read. P0022 shows over, cam sensor over retard bank 2 I beleive this means. Go home changed filter, go for a drive and 100 times better, more power no hesitation ect. woohoo right? not so much... I continue my research monday night and decide to order cam timing sensor and to check vct solenoid.

Tuesday, drive to work and again rough idle when I go to park. less severe since filter change. after work pick up sensor, go home and change it and also pull solenoid and inspect. Solenoid seems okay, and sensor changed.

Wednesday, drive to work same thing? wtf... research all day and come up with fuel filter change possiblilities and broken/unplugged/corroded pcv vacumm line...

This brings me to today...

I am planning to change fuel filter, clean maf, search for vacumm lines and pray this weekend. I am starting to run out of idea to solve this problem. Not only do I not have time or a possible way to take the truck to Ford to look at, I dont want to hear the old cam phasor speach give me $2500, or even worse new engine $6000 deal....

Some addition info...
Truck was purchased be me in September.
To my knowledge Bank 1 cam phasor replaced in August.
Spark plugs done at same time.
Ford receipt shows bank 2 cam phasor in good working condition.

I would like to thank everyone in advance for their suggestions.
If you need anymore info dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks!

Your vct solenoid could be sticking or the cam position senser could be bad or have a bad connection.

I read the post as the filter has already been changed.

Update,

After two or three days with the Motorcraft filter back on and a new cam sensor truck is back to normal, my half hour highway ride and then 4-5 stop lights with no hestitaion, sputter, or shake. God dam fram...

Will keep you updated to see if things stay this way.

Thanks!

Funny how Motorking (the Fram rep) doesn't stick his nose in these threads where we are DOCUMENTING Fram issues - he just goes in the bashing on general principle threads.........

I too have similar issues. I have a 2004 F150 5.4 L Lariat. I was getting ready to take it on a road trip and made it about 15 miles when it started spitting and sputtering on the highway. i pulled over and decided to try to turn around and go home. Made it back home. pulled codes and there was a lot some where misfires on 5,6,7,8 so i replaced all the plugs. cleared codes and ran it. still ran like the timing was off but the misfires did not return. I left for vacation using a different vehicle. when i returned home it still ran bad, I then pulled it apart and replaced timing chains, Cam Phasors, Solenoids. Put it back together and started it. Ran great. took it for a drive about 30 minutes in it acted like the timing was off again. i shut it off and let it sit. started it and it ran great for about 30 minutes again. I changed oil twice. once with castrol 5w 20 and a driveworks filter. then thought maybe that was a bad idea when it was still not better. so i changed oil again. using motorcraft filter and motorcraft synthetic blend 5w 20. still no change. research showed it could have been sludge plugging the oil port to the solenoids. so i ran seafoam in the oil. still not better. i'm at a loss i don't know what could be wrong at this time. i'm about to check the oil pressure and see what that is at. what is normal oil pressure on this truck? if the oil pressure is low what could it be (pump, Pickup screen, ???). any other ideas? Someone thought running a gallon of diesel fuel in the oil for about 15 minutes then changing oil again.
