New on the board, 2006 Fx4 5.4 Supercrew

Just bought my first Ford product about a month ago. Always had GM trucks/SUVs, but loved the styling of the 04-08 (not so much on the 09-newer) I had to have one. Measured 20.5 mpg hwy on a trip to Dallas last week, which is pretty impressive, however only getting 12 mpg around town...not so good, but 16 mpg avg is not bad compared to what I'm used to.

I plan on getting an Edge programmer, bump up to 305 65 18 BFG tires, 2 in level kit. The beef I've always had with 1/2 ton GM trucks is the trannies seem to not last very long when towing 5-7000 lb boats around all summer.
(even when changing the fluid every 30k miles) Please tell me I will be happier with the Ford 1/2 ton tranny. My truck has 90k mi on it and I plan on changing trans fluid soon. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the site!

With regards to the life of the Ford trannys, just like with anything some last longer than others. Many users here have had problem free transmissions, while others have had problems. If you go searching you'll see there may be a number of failures on these forums, but take into consideration this is an enthusiast forum, and you will see more complaint threads compared to praise threads, which is the nature of a message board.

Just keep up with all the PM like you should and take care of her.

Good luck and enjoy the site!!!

RedStinger, I have the same truck, I have owned it since new, bought it in sept-05 it had just come off the truck. I have been pulling a 29' travel trailer that is just over 7,400 LB loaded for camping. no problems at all with the tranny.
I have added a 2" leveling kit and 33" tires which are Toyo Mud countrys mounted on 20" chrome rims. I have also done some performance mods like K&N Cai, Banks Torque tubes (headers) Flowmaster exhaust system, edge evo programmer which I need to change for a Gryphon so I can get custom tunes based on my other mods.
Always maintained. I am currently using Royal Purple oil for the motor,Tranny, transfercase and diff's.

It has been a great truck, even for towing.. you should have no problems as long as you maintain it well.
Bast of luck to you.

Transmission:

I am on my third F150 (which I'm keeping for a while), but I did have a trans go on warranty, and here is what I learned.

Ford slips the primary, and secondary bands to gain the all important tow numbers.

The best way to get it in gear, pronto, is a Factory Tech Separator plate.

The second way, is to change your shift points with a programmer.

(I always pick mechanical logic over programming).

Dieselsite.com has a filter kit. I have it, and no, it hasn't slowed the trans fluid flow. Great secondary protection.

Larger Trans Pan by Mag-Hytec. More fluid means better cooling properties.

Royal Purple Fluid. In fact, Royal Purple for everything.
