Stock 05 f150 beatin a stock 09 in a race??

Ok so I was messing around with my buddy who has a 2009 f150 5.4. I have a 2005 f150 with the 5.4. We raced and I took the race like it was nothing. Both trucks are bone stock. I woulda thought the 09 woulda beat me because its newer and has a LITTLE more power. We were even till i hit variable valve timing in 2nd gear and i just pulled away Can anyone elabrate?

Not suprising, My 97 5.4 with 220,000 on the clock makes my old 2007 5.4 and my 2010 5.4 look sick in a race. Pulling a 5000LB load it's a whole different story.

Extra shifts in his tranny perhaps?

I did the same thing against a 09+ with same body style and 4x4. Also unsure about their gear ratio (I have a 3.73). I also have a programmer, not sure if they did or not.
