Regearing front/rear end.....need help with parts list

Ok, I am pretty sure my truck needs a complete regear. I bought the truck used about a month ago. The truck came to me with 34.3" tires all the way around. I can see a 3" riser lift block on the rear end.....I dont know how much the front has been lifted. However, I am assuming it is prob the same as the rear - approx 3 inches. My truck is stock with a 4.6 motor and 3.55 open rear end. I am newb when it comes to understanding drive-line and differential parts....however, I am not a moron and can grasp the theory and operational aspects of mechanical/electrical systems. So, forgive me if my question(s) seem rather elementary.

OK....so from what I have read...it seems like I need to put 4.1 gears in my truck. I was quoted $2500 parts and labor from two different shops up here in ANC, AK. $2500 seems kinda steep. One of two shops quoted me approx 12 hours of labor if I brought in my own parts......

(1) Do these prices seem reasonable and on par with what you would expect to pay for this kind of service??

(2) How easy it for some one with access to a hydraulic lift to complete such a task on my own??

(3) Additionally, do I (or should I) swap out the rear differential for something different/better at the time of service

(4) As far as parts that would be needed, what I am going to need for a complete re-gear of both the front and rear differential re-gearing

Again, I am new to all of this so any info would greatly be appreciated!! Thanks!!

I would be interested if anyone can chime in on this. I have an 07 HD package and have read several how-to's, although none 100% complete but w/ a manual and some sense you should be able to get the job done. I would be hesitant about doing this job myself, but would try it... whats the worst thing that could happen? lol... A Lift isn't necessary but always helps.

1) Price, I have no idea but 75.00 an hour labor is about right so 75X12=900. Seems 2500 is a lot, but whats the labor rate?
2) Whats wrong w/ jack and jack stands?
3) Have to research that one, depends on what you really wanna do w/ the rig.
4) Not exactly sure, gear sets and some other stuff but I think it's not much more than about 400 bucks in parts.

Don't take this as fact, just tried to get you going in the right direction. I'm more of a fab/mill guy not auto tech.

* Noticed 2500 was parts and labor. Maybe I was thinking about 400 for each diff? I recall reading threads where people mentioned this job was in the 2000 dollar range. Call 3 diff shops and make an average.

Parts list:

4.56 ratio ring and pinion 8.8 axle
4.56 ratio ring and pinion reverse cut 8.8
2 master install kits
Limited slip differential or locker
12 quarts of 75-140W Amsoil gear fluid
1 bottle of Motorcraft friction modifier

4.10's won't help enough to justify the costs. 4.56's should be enough. You also want a limited slip differential of some kind or a locker. Without that, your truck will more or less be a 2WD because when one wheel loses traction, all the power goes to it.

All this is pretty expensive stuff, but you've got to pay to play.

37-38 inch tire... 4.88? Or would you step it up to 5.13? (I'm guessing the next step up is 5.13 but I'm not sure)

Is he charging extra hours of labor IF you bring your own parts?
I ask because 12 hours seems a bit excessive for labor. It should be closer to 8 hours, give or take a little.

^^^ 12 quarts?

Front diff = 3.7 pints
Rear diff = 5.5 pints

Otherwise ,good info - yep, ya need a Traction Lok to be a Fer x Three

It's recommended that you go back after 500 miles and change out the fluids.
