Time for service?

I have 106,000 miles on my 05 F150. I am always on time with my oil changes. The only other work I had done was front and rear brake pads and rotors and all four tires. Should I have my mechanic do an inspection over the entire truck or am I setting myself up to get raked over the coals? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Proper service on these is highly advisable.

Also - refer to the maintenance schedule docs for more info (came with the truck). If you lost them you can find them here: http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...&menuIndex1=17.

You are (over)due for a plug change.

This might be a stupid question but will I get better gas mileage with new plugs?

My wife has a Nissan Murano and I am always the one to bring it in for service and they are always keeping me informed with 30,000 mile 50,000 mile recommended services you should have done to the vehicle. At the Ford dealership they never say a word about them. I know it is my responsibility to know the proper maintenance but you would think they would be pushing these types of service. Just venting.

Have you owned the truck since new so you know the entire service history of the truck?

My local Ford dealer is constantly pestering me with postcards telling me it's time to bring it in for service - and I bought the truck used in another state! I guess it's in OASIS because I've had the dealer do work on it. The computer is actually guessing how many miles it has when it generates the postcard - and it's usually pretty close.

You are overdue for a lot of stuff. Plugs, coolant, diff fluid, transmission fluid. In your maintenance, you did not mention things like air filter, fuel filter. If you haven't done those, I can definitely see a problem with mileage and other things.
Actually, if you haven't done air and fuel filter, I am surprised the vehicle even runs.

If it was my truck and I knew I was going to be running it for at least the next 50 - 75k miles, here is what I would do:

- Service Intake System To Remove Carbon Build Up
- Replace Spark Plugs
- Flush & Fill Cooling System
- Flush & Fill Transmission Fluid
- Flush & Fill Brake Fluid
- Flush & Fill Power Steering Fluid

While I was at it, I would probably go ahead and address any normal service items that needed attention -- brake pads & rotors, fuel filter, air filter, wiper blades, etc.

If you have owned it since new and have kept up with your preventative maintenance, there is no reason why you shouldn't expect another 5+ years of good service out of the truck, making the investment in these items a good financial move. My guess is that all of this work could be performed for about what 4-5 payments on a new truck would run you.

I have been averaging 27,000 to 30,000 miles per year. A majority of the miles on my truck are highway miles since I do a lot of driving for work. So I would be looking at a $2K-$3K investment for the items you listed:

Service Intake System To Remove Carbon Build Up
- Replace Spark Plugs
- Flush & Fill Cooling System
- Flush & Fill Transmission Fluid
- Flush & Fill Brake Fluid
- Flush & Fill Power Steering Fluid

While I was at it, I would probably go ahead and address any normal service items that needed attention -- brake pads & rotors, fuel filter, air filter, wiper blades, etc.

I have no issues doing an oil change, but I have never done any of flush and fill of any other fluids in my truck. Are they as simple as doing an oil change? How cost effective would it be to do it on my own versus having a mechanic perform the work?

Okay, let's back up a bit - what maintenance items HAVE you done since you bought it besides oil changes? Please list them ALL with approximate mileage. No need to relist the brakes and tires.

I have the air filter changed every 20,000 miles. Other than "topping off" the fluids I have not had anything else done. 75% of the time I bring it to the dealership across from my office where I bought the truck. I know the owner and they have treated me well with all my vehicles. Every third oil change (or 10,000 miles) when I bring it to the dealer, I tell them to look over the engine/fluids/brakes/etc and let me know if there is any other work that needs attention now or possibly in the future.

Have you not changed the fuel filter?

I don't know how much it would cost to service the intake system or flush the cooling system and brakes, but I just had my spark plugs replaced, oil and oil filter changed, did a fuel system cleaning, flushed the power steering fluid and flushed transmission fluid. All that was a little under $900 out the door. All that was part of the 60k mile service.

Did you have that done at a dealership? How many miles do you have on your truck?

Yes, it was done at one of my local Ford dealerships. The truck at 60,496 miles at the time of service.

Pics of the old plugs can be found here: https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...k-service.html
