Okay so i had my tranny go out not long ago and that really made me sick. I am ready to take care of some important maintenance and hopefully get a long life out of this truck.

Just looking to get some advice. Links are appreciated.

I have a 05 4.6 with 130k miles. 2wd

1. Idles rough, truck is on stock plugs, time for new ones. What plugs do i need to use? anything other then the plugs? any tips and tricks?

2. Struts. I replaced the rear shocks at 100k with Monroe shocks from Advanced Auto. They were like 60 bucks, the struts are like 120 each, does that sound about right or is there a better one i should get?

3. Sadly, brakes . I need rotors and pads. I would like to spend less then 500 bucks. I would prefer to have slotted rotors, idc if they are drilled or not, pads are cheap. I am gonna paint my calipers, any idea what color i should do? i was thinking blue or the ptm tan.

thanks,

Sam

Regarding plugs, with the 4.6, it wouldn't be a huge task. If you had a 5.4, well, then I'd be more scared.

with the shocks and struts, monroe's are great. I would recommend the quick struts for the front, a little extra $, but you get a whole new assembly without having to compress the springs or any of that.

with the brakes, there are several options. I'm not really too experienced with brakes, since I've only had mine done once. I can tell you though, with the 2WD it is going to be alot more expensive for rotors in front, because the rotor and hub are a one piece assembly. Just be ready for that.

1. Plugs should be an easy dyi task on a 4.6. ~ 1-2 hour job.
2. Shocks and struts... just go with the whole assembly. ~2-4 hour job.
3. Rotors and Pads... go with Wearever ceramics and mid to premium rotors. The 2wd rotors just require a 36mm axle socket along with a pin. ~2-4 hour job.

Make sure you get a new axle bolt! They are not reusable... or they can be... but I don't recommend it, neither does Ford.

Oh, and nice looking truck, btw. I love the scab with long bed combo.
(The longer the better! )

If those are the original plugs with 130,000 miles on them then that would be a good cause for a rough idle. I have changed the plugs out on a hand full of F150's over 100,000 miles, and looking at the plugs when they came out it was a wonder the truck even ran.
A new set of plugs did wonders for every one. 100,000 mile plugs my a**. LOL

When doing the plugs on a 4.6 nearing 100,000 miles, should you replace the COP's as well?
Thanks,
kenji

are you referring to the rubber boot and coil spring on each? Or the entire coil?

I'm not sure. Haha. Should I do the entire coil pack?

not if they still work. inspect the rubber boot for any signs of deterioration and replace them as needed.

don't get the quick strut. just had one, for the lack of a better term, blow up on me. The guy showed it to me, and the assembly inside the spring snapped. they can't remove it without cutting the spring... fantastic.
