Replaced Fuel Filter - Here are the Results ...

Just finished replacing the fuel filter on my truck. The odometer reads 29,745.3 miles. Per the owners manual I went to Advance Auto Parts to get filter number: FG-986-B.

After the guy at the counter searched for a while he came back with a Purolator alternative number: F65574. He went in the back to look some more and returned with the Motorcraft I originally was after.

I was now confused, look at the outside diameter of the nipples of both the filters. Which one do I take home; I took them both and ended up using the Purolator.

The new Motorcraft filter that was called for in the owners manual measured 5/16" in outside diameter and the factory installed filter measured 3/8". What gives?

Here is what the factory filter looked like after 29,745.3 miles.

What poured out of the filter looked like dark muddy colored fuel with fine to medium flakey particles of what ever that was. I just wonder how much of that was getting passed to the injectors.

You needed the FG-1083 filter - 3/8"

imho - you need to change that thing more often than 29k - 15-20k, tops ....

Do you think I need to remove the Purolator and go get the Motorcraft FG-1083?

I guess they didn't revise their manuals before printing them for the 08 trucks, who knows.

You will find both used from 04-08, and sometimes it doesn't make sense which has what. However, I believe *ALL* FFV's use the bigger one.

I try and do my fuel filter every 12,000 miles, but I fill from alot of service tanks at the farm work ect. so it can be pretty dirty.
